The present invention provides a cutting tool in which the hard coating layer demonstrates superior chipping resistance. The cutting tool has a tool base composed with tungsten carbide-based cemented carbide or titanium carbonitride-based Cermet, and a hard coating layer provided on the surface thereof; wherein the hard coating layer includes: (a) a Ti compound and/or Zr compound layer, which is a lower layer, comprising one or more layers of a TiC layer, TiN layer, TiCN layer, TiCO layer, TiCNO layer, ZrC layer, ZrN layer, ZrCN layer, ZrCO layer, ZrCNO layer and (b) an aluminum oxide layer having an &#x3b1; crystal structure which is an upper layer, including the highest peak in the inclination section within a range of 0-10.

Cutting tool

A surface-coated cermet cutting tool with a hard-coating layer having excellent chipping resistance. The hard coating layer is formed on a surface of a tool substrate that constitutes the surface-coated cermet cutting tool. The hard coating layer includes(a) as the lower layer, a titanium compound layer having at least one or two of a titanium carbide layer, a titanium nitride layer, a titanium carbonitride layer, a titanium carboxide layer and a titanium oxycarbonitride layer, and (b) as the upper layer, a heat-transformed &#x3b1;-type Al&#x2014;Zr oxide layer formed by carrying out a heat-transforming treatment in a state that a titanium oxide layer satisfying the composition formula: TiO, &#xa5; The heat-transformed &#x3b1;-type Al&#x2014;Zr oxide layer is chemically deposited on a surface of an Al&#x2014;Zr oxide layer having a &#x3ba;-type or &#x3b8;-type crystal structure and satisfying the composition formula: (AlZr)Oto transform the crystal structure of the Al&#x2014;Zr oxide layer having the &#x3ba;-type or &#x3b8;-type crystal structure into an &#x3b1;-type crystal structure.

Surface-coated cermet cutting tool with a hard coating layer exhibiting excellent chipping resistance

There is provided a surface-coated cermet cutting tool with a hard-coating layer having excellent chipping resistance. The surface-coated cermet cutting tool is formed by coating, on a surface of a tool substrate made of WC-based cemented carbide or TiCN-based cermet, a hard-coating layer including the following upper and lower layers (a) and (b): (a) as the lower layer, a Ti compound layer having at least one or two of a TiC layer, a TiN layer, a TiCN layer, a TiCO layer and a TiCNO layer, all of which are deposited by chemical vapor deposition, the titanium compound layer having a total average thickness of 3 to 20 &#x3bc;m, and (b) as the upper layer, a heat-transformed &#x3b1;-type Al oxide layer formed by carrying out a heat-transforming treatment in a state that titanium oxide particulates satisfying the composition formula: TiO, (where value Y is 1.2 to 1.9 in an atomic ratio to Ti when measured by Auger Electron Spectroscopy) and chemically deposited as a transformation starting material are dispersedly distributed on a surface of an Al oxide layer having a &#x3ba;-type or &#x3b8;-type crystal structure deposited by chemical vapor deposition and satisfying the composition formula: (AlZr)O(where value X is 0.003 to 0.05 in an atomic ratio when measured by an electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA)) to thereby transform the crystal structure of the Al oxide layer having the &#x3ba;-type or &#x3b8;-type crystal structure into an &#x3b1;-type crystal structure, the heat-transformed &#x3b1;-type Al oxide layer having an average thickness of 1 to 15 &#x3bc;m.

The present invention provides a cutting tool in which the hard coating layer demonstrates superior chipping resistance. A cutting tool having a hard coating layer including: a Ti compound layer, as a lower layer, formed by vapor deposition, having an average thickness of 0.5 to 20 &mgr;m and made of at least one layer chosen from among a carbide of Ti layer, a nitride of Ti layer, a carbonitride of Ti layer, a carboxide of Ti layer and a carbonitroxide of Ti layer; an aluminum oxide layer, as an intermediate layer, which has an average thickness of 1 to 25 &mgr;m and a heat transformed &agr;-type crystal structure derived from a vapor deposited &kgr;- or &thgr;-type aluminum oxide layer, and having a structure having cracks therein formed during heat transformation uniformly dispersed; and an aluminum oxide layer, as an upper layer, formed by vapor deposition having an average thickness of 0.3 to 10 &mgr;m and an &agr;-type crystal structure.

A coated cemented carbide cutting tool member having excellent ability to prevent breakage and chipping around its cutting edge, exhibits high wear resistance in severe cutting operations comprises a hard sintered substrate and a hard coating layer deposited on the surface of said substrate, the hard coating layer comprises an alternated multi-layer structure having a total thickness of between 0.5 to 20 &mgr;m and comprising the first thin layer of titanium compounds and the second thin layer of hard oxide materials whose individual thickness is between 0.01 to 0.3 &mgr;m.

A coated hard alloy blade member is disclosed which includes a substrate formed of a hard alloy of a WC-based cemented carbide or a TiCN-based cermet, and a hard coating deposited on the substrate. The hard coating includes an inner layer of TiCN having unilaterally grown crystals of an elongated shape and an outer layer of Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 having a crystal form .kappa. or .kappa.+.alpha. wherein .kappa.&gt;.alpha.. The resulting blade member is highly resistant to wear and fracturing, and possesses cutting ability of a higher level.

Coated hard alloy blade member

The present invention provide for a cutting tool member that has been coated with a hard coating. The hard coating has multiple layers including: a) a layer made of a titanium compound that has a cubic lattice structure, b) an Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 layer, and c) an intervening layer that includes a Ti.sub.2 O.sub.3 compound with a corundum-type lattice structure. The hard coating layer provides the cutting tool member with good strength and increases its operational lifetime.

A method of preparing a coated cutting tool is provided involving formation of a hard coating layer including an aluminum oxide layer to an average layer thickness of 3-20 microns on the surface of a cutting tool substrate using chemical vapor deposition and/or physical vapor deposition, to give a coated cutting tool excellent in chipping resistance, where the aluminum oxide layer is formed from an inert gas type reaction gas containing aluminum chloride and nitrogen oxides, and optionally titanium tetrachloride, nitrogen and hydrogen, in an inert carrier gas.

A cutting tool whose surface is coated with a composite hard layer formed by chemical vapor deposition and having excellent wear resistance and chipping resistance. The cutting tool contains a substrate whose surface is coated with a composite hard layer containing an inner layer including one or more layers of titanium carbide, titanium nitride, titanium carbonitride, titanium carboxide, and titanium oxicarbonitride, and an outer layer including at least one alumina layer. The alumina layer contains K-type alumina such that an X-ray intensity ratio I.sub.A /I.sub.B of two specific crystal faces A and B in X-ray diffraction is not smaller than 2, where the A-face and B-face denote faces of K-type alumina defined as those whose interfacial distances are 2.79.ANG. and 2.57.ANG. in ASTM4-0878, and I.sub.A and I.sub.B denote X-ray intensity of the faces A and B in X-ray diffraction.
