The present invention provides a work machine including a steering device that is very responsive to switching operations. The work machine includes: a proportional solenoid valve for outputting a first pilot pressure oil with a pressure responding to a steering signal; a solenoid valve for outputting a second pilot pressure oil with a predetermined pressure while the steering signal is outputted from the steering device; a switching valve capable of switching to a first state of outputting the first pilot pressure oil to a directional control valve and a second state of outputting the second pilot pressure oil to the directional control valve, while the first pilot pressure oil is outputted from the proportional solenoid valve and the second pilot pressure oil is outputted from the solenoid valve in parallel; and a controller to switch the switching valve from the first state to the second state in a case where a malfunction is detected in a main circuit ranging from the steering device to the directional control valve via the proportional solenoid valve and the switching valve of the first state.

A first valve device disposed between actuator hydraulic lines and a regeneration hydraulic motor, has a throttle passage capable of increasing pressure in the higher pressure side actuator hydraulic line to a set pressure of the relief valves. A second valve device disposed in parallel with the first valve device between the actuator hydraulic lines and the regeneration hydraulic motor, is switched from a close to an open position by pressure between the first valve device and the regeneration hydraulic motor when pressure between the first valve device and the regeneration hydraulic motor increases to approach the set pressure of the swing relief valve.

When the amount of electricity stored in a capacitor is appropriate, the upper swing structure is driven by both the hydraulic motor and the electric motor. When the amount of electricity stored in the capacitor exceeds an appropriate value, the mode is changed over to a mode in which the upper swing structure is driven only by the hydraulic motor, and an assist electric generation motor is assist-driven or engine-driven to thereby rapidly return the amount of electricity stored in the capacitor to an appropriate range. The capacity of the capacitor can be reduced, and the amount of electricity stored in the capacitor can be managed without losing the operability of swing motion.
