The present invention provides an aqueous two-package type clear coating composition comprising: (A) an aqueous dispersion of a hydroxyl group- and acid group-containing acrylic resin having a hydroxyl value of 30 to 200 mg KOH/g, an acid value of 5 to 50 mg KOH/g, a weight average molecular weight of 3,000 to 30,000, and a glass transition temperature of &#x2212;30 to +40&#xb0; C. obtained by radical polymerization of 10 to 50 mass % of a secondary hydroxyl group-containing monomer (a) and 50 to 90 mass % of at least one other unsaturated monomer (b); and (B) a polyisocyanate curing agent obtained by mixing (c) a polyisocyanate compound and (d) a compound containing an anionic functional group, a polyoxyethylene group, and a hydrocarbon group, and a process for forming a multilayer topcoat film using the same.

An object of the present invention is to provide an aqueous coating composition capable of forming a coating film having a superior finishing appearance. The present invention provides an aqueous coating composition comprising a polyester resin containing a predetermined or greater amount of long chain, straight-chain dicarboxylic acid and/or straight-chain diols having a predetermined or greater carbon number and having hydroxy groups and acid values within predetermined ranges; a urethane-associated thickener having a hydrophobic group and/or a polyacrylicacid-based thickener having a hydrophobic group; a curing agent; and a hydrophobic solvent, wherein the contents of the thickener and the hydrophobic solvent are within a specific range based on the gross amount of the polyester resin and the curing agent. This invention offers a method for forming multilayer coating film by successively applying onto a coating object a water-based first coloring paint, water-based second coloring paint and clear paint, and simultaneously baking the resultant first coloring coating film, second coloring coating film and clear coating film, in which the water-based first coloring paint (A) comprises polyester resin and curing agent, the polyester resin containing benzene ring and cyclohexane ring in its molecules, their combined content in the polyester resin being within a range of 1.0-2.2 mols/kg (solid resin content); and that the curing agent is at least one compound selected from the group consisting of isocyanate group-containing compound, oxazoline group-containing compound, carbodiimide group-containing compound, hydrazide group-containing compound and semicarbazide group-containing compound. A process for production of a powder coating comprising: copolymerizing a monomer mixture comprising a (meth)acrylate monomer having branched or cyclic substituents of four or more carbon atoms in its side chain and a (meth)acrylate monomer having functional groups to form a thermosetting vinyl copolymer (a) having a glass transition temperature of approximately 40.degree. to 100.degree. C. and a number average molecular weight of approximately 1,000 to 10,000; dissolving or dispersing said copolymer (a) and a crosslinking agent (b) in a solvent comprising approximately at least 50% by weight based on the weight of the solvent, of tert-butanol, to form a resulting coating solution having a melting point of not less than approximately -30.degree. C.; and lyophilizing said coating solution under a pressure not higher than approximately 50 mmHg. The present process produces a powder coating without polymerization due to progression of reaction upon heat generated during production, and without generation of gelated material.
