A new austenitic stainless steel containing approximately 0.1-1.0 mass % of Si and not more than approximately 0.003 mass % of Al. Nonmetallic inclusions dispersed in a steel matrix are converted to MnO&#x2014;SiO&#x2014;AlOcontaining not less than approximately 15 mass % of SiOand not more than approximately 40 mass % of AlO. During steel making, molten steel is covered with basic slag and heavily deoxidized with a Si alloy whose Al content is controlled to not more than approximately 1.0 mass % in a vacuum or non-oxidizing atmosphere. The austenitic stainless steel sheet can be formed to an objective shape without the occurrence of cracking due to its decrease in susceptibility to cracking and its good formability.

Method of manufacturing austenitic stainless steel having less susceptibility to cracking during forming

A new austenitic stainless steel containing approximately 0.1-1.0 mass % of Si and not more than approximately 0.003 mass % of Al. An electric resistance material comprises an Fe&mdash;Cr&mdash;Ni alloy having composition of C up to 0.1%, Si up to 5%, Mn up to 6%, 9-32% Cr, 6-25% Ni, N up to 0.2%, 0-3% Mo, 0-4% Cu, 0-5% Al, 0-0.4% Ti, 0-0.4% Nb, 0-0.005% B and the balance being substantially Fe with the previsions that the value A defined by the formula (1) and the value B defined by the formula (2) are not less than 78 and not less than 14, respectively. The electric resistance material is high of resistivity with less temperature dependency, and a resistor made therefrom works well without noises during flow of electricity.

A newly proposed steel consists of 8.0-35.0 wt. % Cr, 0.05-1.20 wt. % C, 0.05-3.0 wt. % at least one of Ti, Nb, Zr, V and W and the balance being essentially Fe and has the structure that a total amount of Ti, Nb, Zr, V and/or W carbide precipitates distributed in a steel matrix is adjusted to 0.l wt. % or more. The steel is bestowed with excellent abrasion-resistance by distribution of carbide precipitates. These carbides have nearly the same hardness as hard particles such as alumina and silicon carbides which causes abrasive abrasion. Due to such excellent abrasion-resistance, a weaving machine member, a sewing needle, an agricultural machine member such as a mowing tooth or a cutter blade made of the steel can be used over a long period.

A metal strip is continuously cast through a gap of a pair of internally cooled rolls rotating in the opposite direction to each other having a pair of side dams disposed on both sides of the rolls and a pair of longitudinal dams disposed with their bottom surfaces held slightly above the roll surfaces so that openings are formed between the bottom surfaces of the longitudinal dams and the roll surfaces and that during steady state operation of the apparatus the openings are positioned at a level of the surface of molten metal in the pool. The longitudinal dams are capable of preventing formation of triple point solidified shells and make it possible that the surface of molten metal may come in contact with the surfaces of the rolls while forming the transversely uniform contacting edges, and therefore, the apparatus produces metal strips having enhanced surface quality which are substantially free from molten metal wrinkles. The advantages are further promoted by using a pouring device having a slit-shaped nozzle.

A twin roll continuous casting apparatus for continuously casting a metal strip through a gap of a pair of internally cooled rolls rotating in the opposite direction to each other having a pair of abradable side dams disposed on both sides of the rolls wherein a vessel for a pool of molten metals provided, at least a portion of the bottom or sides of the vessel slidably contacting the circumferential surface of the lower roll.

A continuous casting apparatus for continuously casting metal strip through a gap between a pair of opposite internal cooling rolls rotating in the opposite direction to each other, wherein side dams have the bottom surfaces contacting the circumferential surfaces of both rolls and made of refractories having satisfactory abrasiveness, and a mechanism is provided for feeding the side dams in the casting direction at a predetermined speed, the circumferential surface portion of the roll contacting the side dam being formed into a rough surface having grindability, whereby the movement of the side dam by the feeding mechanism is carried out through the wear of the side dam caused by the grinding of the rough surface.

Continuous casting apparatus for steel plate

A twin-roll type continuous casting apparatus comprises a pair of rotatable drums and a pair of side dams disposed on both axial ends of the drums so that a pool of molten steel is defined by the drums and the side dams. As the drums are rotated in counter directions, the molten steel is cooled so that the molten steel is partially solidified to form solidification shells which are then pressure-bonded to each other as they pass through the narrowest gap defined between the drums, so that a steel sheet is formed by continuous casting. The side dam is composed of a side refractory part which functions to maintain the pool of molten steel and a metallic member which supports the side refractory part and which serves as a cooling plate for cooling the steel. The side refractory part is projected inwardly of the pool from the metallic member and arranged so that the lower end thereof is positioned in the vicinity of a point where the pressure-bonding of the solidification shells is commenced, the point being located above the narrowest gap defined between the drums.
