The colored portion is detected by an optical sensor, and a control unit controls the driving of the conveyance belt in response to a signal derived from the detection of the optical sensor.

When the head recovery means is retracted from the ink jet head, the head recovery means is inclined so that the side thereof having the waste ink opening is lower than the opposite side.
