A cutting tool composed of a sintered cermet body is disclosed. The body includes hard phases composed of carbide(s), nitride(s), and carbonitride(s) of metal(s) selected from metals belonging to Groups 4, 5, and 6 of the periodic table including Ti as a main component, and includes first and second hard phases, and a binding phase mainly composed of at least one of Co and Ni. The body includes first and second faces, a cutting edge located at an edge of the first and second faces, and an interior portion located at a depth of 400 &#x3bc;m or more from the first face. When residual stresses are measured by a 2D method, stress of the first hard phase is 80 MPa or more in terms of compressive stress. Stresses of the second hard phase and the binding phase are &#x2212;50 MPa to 50 Mpa in terms of compressive or tensile stress.

Cutting tool

A sintered cermet and a cutting tool are provided which have high toughness and high anti-chipping. The sintered cermet comprises a hard phase composed of one or more kinds selected from carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides of one or more metals selected from metals belonging to Groups 4, 5, and 6 of the periodic table, each of which is composed mainly of Ti; and a binder phase composed mainly of Ni and Co. When the crystal lattice constant of the binder phase is measured by Pawley method, two kinds of binder phases having two kinds of crystal lattice constants B1 and B2 exist in the interior of the sintered cermet. Alternatively, two peaks belonging to the (220) plane of the hard phase, namely, a low-angle-side-peak and a high-angle-side peak are detected in the interior of the sintered cermet, and a modified part exists in the vicinity of the surface, in which three peaks belonging to the (220) plane of the hard phase, namely, the low-angle-side peak, an intermediate-position peak, and the high-angle-side peak are detected.

Sintered cermet and cutting tool

Provided is a cutting tool which comprises a sintered cermet having high toughness and thermal shock resistance. The cutting tool, namely a tip, comprises a sintered cermet comprising: a hard phasecomprising one or more selected from among carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides which comprise mainly Ti; and a binder phasecomprising mainly at least one of Co and Ni. The tiphas a cutting edgelying along an intersecting ridge portion between a rake faceand a flank face, and a nose. The hard phasecomprises a first hard phaseand a second hard phase. When a residual stress is measured on the rake faceby 2D method, a residual stress &#x3c3;] of the first hard phasein a direction (&#x3c3;direction), which is parallel to the rake faceand goes from the center of the rake faceto the nose being the closest to a measuring point, is 50 MPa or below in terms of compressive stress (&#x3c3;]=&#x2212;50 to 0 MPa), and a residual stress &#x3c3;] of the second hard phasein the &#x3c3;direction is 150 MPa or above in terms of compressive stress (&#x3c3;]&#x2266;&#x2212;150 MPa).

A Ti-based cermetincludes at least one of Co and Ni, at least one of titanium carbide, titanium nitride and titanium carbonitride including at least one selected from the metal elements of groups 4, 5 and 6 of the periodic table, and Ru.

Ti-based cermet

Disclosed is a cemented carbide comprising 5 to 10 mass % of cobalt and/or nickel, and 0 to 10 mass % of at least one selected from a carbide (except for tungsten carbide), a nitride and a carbonitride of at least one selected from the group consisting of metals of groups 4, 5 and 6 of the Periodic Table, the balanced amount of tungsten carbide, a hard phase comprising mainly tungsten carbide particles, and containing &#x3b2; particles of at least one selected from the carbide, the nitride and the carbonitride, and the hard phase being bonded through a binder phase comprising mainly cobalt and/or nickel, wherein a mean particle size of the tungsten carbide particles is 1 &#x3bc;m or less, and the cemented carbide having a sea-island structure in which plural binder-phase-aggregated portions composed mainly of cobalt and/or nickel are scattered in the proportion of 10 to 70 area % based on the total area on the surface of the cemented carbide. The cemented carbide is excellent in wear resistance and fracture resistance.

Cemented carbide and cutting tool

A cermet comprises a binding phase made of a binding metal including Co and/or Ni. The binding phase is 5 to 30 mass %. The cermet further comprises a plurality of hard particles bound each other with the binding phase. The hard particles comprise core-containing structure particles having cores and shells both including TiCN. The core-containing structure particles comprise first core-containing structure particles of which shells contain the binding metal and second core-containing structure particles of which cores and shells both contain the binding metal.

TiCN-base cermet and cutting tool and method for manufacturing cut article using the same

A cutting tool having a substrate and a coating layer for coating the surface of the substrate, the coating layer being composed of TiAlWSiM(CN), where M is at least one selected from Nb, Mo, Ta, Hf and Y, 0.45&#x2266;a&#x2266;0.55, 0.01&#x2266;b&#x2266;0.1, 0.01&#x2266;c&#x2266;0.05, 0.01&#x2266;d&#x2266;0.1, and 0&#x2266;x&#x2266;1. The cutting tool has excellent wear resistance and fracture resistance. The cutting tool may be further provided with a layer composed of at least one selected from carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides of Al and the elements of the groups 4, 5 and 6 of the periodic table.

The throw-away tip has a shape of substantially flat plate, comprising from 1 to 30% by weight of binder phase comprising at least one kind of Co and Ni, and 70 to 99% by weight of carbonitride phase comprising composite metal carbonitride of Ti and one or more kind other than Ti among metals of groups 4, 5and 6of the Periodic Table, wherein the mean grain size of the carbonitride phase is 1.5 &#x3bc;m or less, while flexural strength test pieces which are cut out of ten throw-away tips including the side face thereof show flexural strength with a Weibull coefficient of 5 or higher. Throw-away tips having fine carbonitride phase structure and high cutting performance can be made with less variance among individual throw-away tips.
