The present invention relates to a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery () which includes: a positive electrode (); a negative electrode (); a non-aqueous electrolyte containing a non-aqueous solvent; an outer package () receiving the positive electrode (), the negative electrode (), and the non-aqueous electrolyte; and a current interrupt valve () which interrupts a current in response to an increase in pressure inside the outer package (). The positive electrode () contains a carbonate compound, the non-aqueous solvent contains a fluorinated cyclic carbonate and a fluorinated chain ester, and the total content of the fluorinated cyclic carbonate and the fluorinated chain ester is with respect to the total volume of the non-aqueous solvent, 50 percent by volume or more.

A nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery disclosed in the present application includes: a positive electrode capable of absorbing and releasing lithium, containing a positive electrode active material composed of a lithium-containing transition metal oxide having a layered crystalline structure; and a negative electrode capable of absorbing and releasing lithium, containing a negative electrode active material composed of a lithium-containing transition metal oxide obtained by substituting some of Ti element of a lithium-containing titanium oxide having a spinel crystalline structure with one or more element different from Ti, wherein a retention of the negative electrode is set to be greater than a retention of the positive electrode, and an irreversible capacity rate of the negative electrode is set to be greater than an irreversible capacity rate of the positive electrode, whereby a discharge ends by negative electrode limitation.

The non-aqueous solvent contains a fluoroethylene carbonate, a difluorobutylene carbonate, and at least one of a fluorinated chain carbonate and a fluorinated chain carboxylic acid ester, total volumetric contents of which is more than 50 percent with respect to the total volume of the non-aqueous solvent.

A negative-electrode active material disclosed herein contains a lithium titanate having a spinel structure, and satisfies the relationship B&#xd7;P&#x3c;50, where B is a specific surface (unit: m/g) of the lithium titanate as measured by a BET technique; and P is obtained by immersing 1 g of the lithium titanate in 50 cmof redistilled water and determining a pH of the redistilled water after 30 minutes of agitation.

To improve high temperature storage characteristic of a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery suitable for high input/output application, the structure of a positive electrode active material is optimized. A negative electrode active material for lithium ion secondary batteries of the present invention includes a lithium-titanium composite oxide that has a composition represented by LiTiFeO(where x satisfies 0&#x3c;x&#x2266;0.3) or LiTiMnO(where y satisfies 0&#x3c;y&#x2266;0.3) and that has an average particle diameter of primary particles which is not less than 1 &#x3bc;m.

A nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery according to the present invention includes a positive electrode and a negative electrode which are capable of reversibly occluding and releasing lithium; a resin layer provided between the positive electrode and the negative electrode; a battery case accommodating the positive electrode, the negative electrode and the resin layer; a nonaqueous electrolyte solution filling the battery case; and an insulating layer interposed, at least partially, between the positive electrode and the resin layer, the insulating layer containing aluminum fluoride.

Nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery and method for manufacturing the same

Disclosed is a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery comprising a positive electrode containing a nickel-containing lithium composite oxide, a negative electrode containing graphite, and a non-aqueous electrolyte. The cut-off voltage of charge of this non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery is 4.25 to 4.6 V. The negative electrode contains an additive that reacts with lithium at a potential higher than the potential of graphite. The ratio A/B of a positive electrode capacity A based on the weight of the nickel-containing lithium composite oxide and the cut-off voltage of charge relative to a weight B of the graphite contained in a portion of a negative electrode material mixture layer opposing to a positive electrode material mixture layer is 300 to 340 mAh/g, and the irreversible capacity C of the positive electrode and the irreversible capacity D of the negative electrode in the portion opposing to the positive electrode satisfies C&#x2267;D.

Non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery with high capacity and good life characteristics

A non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery including: an electrode group in which a positive electrode and a negative electrode are spirally wound with a separator interposed therebetween; and a non-aqueous electrolyte including a non-aqueous solvent and a lithium salt dissolved in the non-aqueous solvent, the positive electrode including a positive electrode material mixture layer containing a nickel-containing lithium composite metal oxide, wherein a product of A and B equals 150 to 350, A equals 15 to 20%, and B equals 10 to 25%, where A (%) represents a porosity of the positive electrode material mixture layer, and B (%) represents a volume percentage of ethylene carbonate in the non-aqueous solvent.
