In a process for producing a product coated with a water repellent film which comprises applying on a base substrate a coating liquid containing a silicon alkoxide, a fluoroalkyl group-containing silane compound and an acid dissolved in a solvent and drying; the process for producing a product coated with a water repellent film being characterized in that said coating liquid contains: said silicon alkoxide or a hydrolysate thereof is present at a concentration equivalent to 0.01 to 2% by weight of silica formed by hydrolysis of the silicon alkoxide, said fluoroalkyl group-containing silane compound is present at a concentration equivalent to 0.00001 to 0.15% by weight of silica formed by hydrolysis of the fluoroalkyl group-containing silane compound, 0.003-3 normality of said acid, and 0-20% by weight of water. The invention further provides water repellent products having a good rolling properly of water drops, a high scratching resistance and a high weatherability prepared by the process of the invention.

For obtaining a substrate on the surface of which a water repellent film is firmly bonded through an undercoating film, and which shows a low critical inclination angle, superior durability, and high density, a water repellent and/or oil repellent film layer is formed by using a liquid for undercoating treatment. The liquid for undercoating treatment is obtained by dissolving and reacting a material having chlorosilyl radicle radicle in molecular form therein and is dissolved into an alcohol group solvent, so that a surface roughness (Ra) of less than 0.5 nm is obtained, thereby achieving high durability and a low critical inclination angle.

Coating liquid prepared by dissolving an acid and a silicon alkoxide into alcohol, containing at least one of either a silicon alkoxide or a hydrolyzate thereof (including a partial hydrolyzate) in an amount of 0.010 to 3% by weight (in terms of silica), an acid in terms of 0.0010 to 1.0 normality, and water in terms of 0 to 10% by weight is coated on a substrate to produce an article coated with a silica-based film. By this method for producing a silica-based film coated article, an excellent silica-based film coated article can be obtained without requiring baking and pretreatment. Furthermore, a functional film coated article excellent in durability can be produced in a short period of time and safely by using the abovementioned silica-based film as a primer film and applying thereon an organosilane having a hydrolyzable group and a functional group having a specific function or a hydrolyzate thereof.

Water-repellent articles having an excellent water repellency, particularly water-repellent articles having a great contact angle with respect to waterdrop, an excellent waterdrop rollability, a high scuff resistance and a high weathering resistance, a method for producing the water-repellent articles, and a solution for forming a water-repellent film are dsiclosed. A novel method for producing water-repellent articles is provided, which comprises dissolving a chlorosilyl group-containing compound and a fluoroalkyl group-containing silane compound in a solvent containing an alcohol and/or water content to obtain a solution having the chloro group in said chlorosilyl group-containing compound substituted by an alkoxyl group or hydroxyl group, applying said solution to the surface of a substrate, and then drying the coated material to form a water-repellent film.

This invention provides a water repellant glass plate for vehicles or buildings, which shows a long-term durability. The water repellant glass plate includes a primer layer on a glass substrate, consisting essentially of silicon oxide in which oxygen atoms are partially substituted by hydroxyl groups, at a thickness between 10 nm and 100 nm, and a second layer on the first layer consisting of an organic silicon compound including a fluoroalkyl group at a thickness between about 0.2 nm and about 40 nm.

A vertical glass melting furnace of the type having an inlet for raw materials at the top thereof, an outlet for molten glass at the bottom thereof, and a tabular electric resistance heating element for melting which is immersed at some level in molten glass, has at least one opening, and covers almost entirely the cross-section of the furnace at that level, the vertical glass melting furnace comprising a stirrer which extends from above the furnace and passes through the batch layer and the tabular heating element so that the stirrer brings about forced circulation for homogenization of the molten glass which has passed through the tabular heating element and stays in the region below the tabular heating element.
