An LED lamp has a substrate on which an LED is mounted, a dome-shaped translucent part covering the LED, a heat-radiating section connected to the substrate, a metal cap section to be connected to a power supply source, and a socket unit for connecting the heat-radiation section and the metal cap section, the socket unit having a socket opening section; the heat-radiating section having a body section connected to the substrate, a plurality of heat-radiating fins connected to the body section, and a cover section connected to the heat-radiating fins, the cover section covering the heat-radiating fins; and an air channel being configured so as to pass through from a gap between the translucent part and the cover section, between the heat-radiating fins, and to the socket opening section.

A single light guide plate illuminates both first and second liquid crystal display panels opposed to each other, the second liquid crystal display panel having a larger display area than that of the first liquid crystal display panel. A light-absorbing sheet is provided between the light guide plate and the first liquid crystal display panel to absorb light from the light guide plate and has a light-transmitting part aligned with the first liquid crystal display panel in a direction from the light guide plate toward the first liquid crystal display panel to transmit light from the light guide plate to the first liquid crystal display panel. A reflective polarizing sheet is provided between the second liquid crystal display panel and the light guide plate. The light-absorbing sheet eliminates brightness unevenness on the second liquid crystal display panel, which would otherwise occur due to the influence of the first liquid crystal display panel, and the reflective polarizing sheet allows effective utilization of light from the light guide plate.

A backlight unit includes a planar light source member that has a light-emitting surface and that emits light having directivity in a perpendicular direction to the light-emitting surface. An optical member has a light-receiving surface opposed to the light-emitting surface of the planar light source member and a light-emitting surface opposite to the light-receiving surface. The light-receiving surface has a multiplicity of prisms. By the prism action, the optical member emits the light having directivity in the perpendicular direction from the planar light source member as light having directivity in at least two directions on opposite sides of the perpendicular direction. The directions of light directivity are changed by varying the apex angle of the prisms.
