[Problem] A separator for a lead acid storage battery that is prevented from suffering the puncture of a separator formed of a microporous film is to be provided. [Solution] The separator includes: a microporous film having a thickness of from 0.1 to 0.3 mm as a base portion; plural main ribsthat are provided on one surfaceof the base portion; and plural miniature ribsthat have a lower height than a height of the main ribsand are provided on the other surfaceof the base portion, and the plural miniature ribsare provided in a linear form with an inter-rib distance P, which is a distance between facing surfaces of the adjacent miniature ribs, of less than 1.9 mm.

Separator for lead acid storage battery

To provide a convenient and effective method for suppressing the penetration of dendrite over the microporous film mainly containing the base portion, which occupies the most part of the entire separator (total area), rather than the peculiar concept (resulting in a difficult measure), in which only the pore structure of the rib portion is densified or contracted for suppressing dendrite from penetrating through the rib portion. A separator for a lead-acid battery, containing a microporous film obtained in such a manner that a raw material composition mainly containing a polyolefin resin, silica powder, and a plasticizer is melt-kneaded and formed into a film, from which the plasticizer is entirely or partially removed, the raw material composition containing glass flakes having an average particle diameter of from 20 to 800 &#x3bc;m and an average thickness of 0.2 to 8 &#x3bc;m and having no self-film formability in an amount of from 2 to 15% by weight based on a total amount of the silica powder and the glass flakes, the glass flakes in the microporous film being disposed in such a manner that a plane direction thereof is substantially oriented in a plane direction of the microporous film, a value of (the content of the glass flakes in the microporous film)/(the average thickness of the glass flakes in the microporous film) being 1 or more.

A separator for a valve regulated lead-acid battery which comprises a paper sheet where very fine glass fiber is a main component, which has a piercing strength (puncture strength) of 4.5 N/mm or more and a tensile strength of 7.0 N/10 mmor more. The paper sheet is made by blending 80 to 90% by weight of glass fiber having 1.5 &#x3bc;m or less average fiber size, 5 to 10% by weight of single-material monofilament-form thermally non-adhesive organic fiber (non-heat-bondable organic fiber) and 5 to 10% by weight of single-material monofilament-form thermally adhesive organic fiber (heat-bondable organic fiber) comprising the same kind of material as in the thermally non-adhesive organic fiber in a wet papermaking process whereupon the fiber materials are bonded each other by thermal fusion of the thermally adhesive organic fiber whereby a coat (film) by melting of the organic fiber is not substantially formed on the surface of the glass fiber.

A separator for a lead-acid battery enabling the lead acid battery to infallibly have a predetermined capacity after the initial charging and a prolonged service life by limiting the maximum quantity of reducing substance liberated or produced from the separator at or below a given level. The separator for a lead-acid battery comprising a porous membrane made mainly from a polyolefin resin, an inorganic powder and a mineral oil and containing a surface active agent as an auxiliary material, characterized in that the amount of any reducing substance liberated or eluted after 24 hours of electrolysis carried out at about 25&#xb0; C. with a direct current of 1.2 A by using an electrolytic cell composed of the porous membrane, a positive electrode, a negative electrode and diluted sulfuric acid is 1.0 ml or less per 100 cmwhen calculated from the consumption of a (1/100)N potassium permanganate solution per 100 cmof the porous membrane.

Separator for lead-acid battery

An object of the present invention is to provide a glass fiber package where a glass fiber aggregate which contains alkali-containing glass wool fiber of a very small diameter having an average fiber size of 5 &#x3bc;m or less or, particularly, less than 1 &#x3bc;m and containing 5% or more by weight or, particularly, 10% or more by weight of alkali metal oxide components is packed in a compressed state to give a form which is able to be handled as a freight, and in which, fiber breakage (lowering in the fiber length) and fiber adhesion caused by compression packing is hardly resulted even upon a long-term storage whereby the properties inherent to the glass fiber immediately after its manufacture is apt to be maintained; to provide a method for packing the glass fiber; and to provide a glass fiber product using the same. A glass fiber package of the present invention includes a glass fiber aggregate which contains alkali-containing glass wool fiber having an average fiber size of 5 &#x3bc;m or less and containing 5% or more by weight of alkali metal oxide components is packed in a compressed state so as to give a form which is able to be handled as a freight where the bulk density is 80 to 135 kg/m.
