A projection type image display apparatus () comprises a focus correction system (). The system includes a temperature detection mechanism () for measuring temperature in the vicinity of a projection lens group (), a correction amount calculation unit () for calculating a correction amount for correcting the focus shift caused by a temperature change, and a driving signal generation unit () for generating, based on the correction amount, a driving signal for driving a focus adjustment mechanism (). If the user performs a focus adjustment using a focus operation input unit (), a focus operation determination unit () determines that a focus adjustment has occurred independently of the focus correction system and changes a correction condition stored in a memory ().

Projection type image display apparatus

A projection type image display apparatus has: an illumination optical system generating illumination light; a projection optical system projecting an image light onto a screen; a digital micromirror device (DMD) modulating the illumination light so as to form the image light; and a reflection mirror arranged in a position opposite to an optical path of the illumination light entering the DMD. The reflection mirror reflects an off-light reflected by the DMD in an 'OFF' state in a direction separated from a projection light reflected by the DMD in an 'ON' state.

In a projection-type display apparatus that directs light from a light source through the illumination optical system to a display panel so that an image displayed on the display panel illuminated by the light directed thereto is projected through a projection optical system onto a screen, an illumination optical system is used that has a light intensity uniformizing device of which the entrance surface is located at a first conjugate position substantially conjugate with the light source and of which the exit surface has a shape geometrically similar to the panel surface of the display panel and a reflection optical system for forming an image of the exit surface of the light intensity uniformizing device on the panel surface of the display panel.
