The present invention relates to a line module protection method and a device utilizing that method. According to the line module protection method of the present invention, line module protection is performed by switching the connection from a broken line accommodating module to an auxiliary module. A plurality of line accommodating modules are included in a line accommodating unit connected to the lines in a network. The plurality of line accommodating modules are divided into a plurality of groups, and the auxiliary module is placed substantially at the same distance from all the groups. Thus, a large number of line accommodating modules for performing line module protection can be employed with one auxiliary module.

A data transfer system including an exchange, wherein the exchange transfers data by sharing a plurality of channels by a time division multiplex mode. In this case, the exchange transfers the data by variably allocating respective time slots to be occupied by the respective channels. That is, it is possible to allot any line speed to any channel and therefore possible to mix signals with different data transfer speeds in the frames. This results in an exchange network with a high degree of freedom of transfer for the subscriber terminal equipment.

The electric contact with a base metal having a contact promoting shape is formed by die forging of a contact material joined to the base metal by resistance welding. The composite contact material is prepared by coating the core material of Ag-oxide contact material with non-oxide contact material. The side of the material in contact with the base metal is of non-oxide contact material. The contact material may be pressed to fill a groove preformed in the base metal, welded to protrusions preformed in the base metal, welded to the bottom of a cut preformed in the base metal, or welded to bottoms of recesses preformed in the base metal.

Accordingly, a signal from a digital subscriber is efficiently processed, and an analog subscriber is also accommodated so that a call control in the same way as for the digital subscriber is made possible for the analog subscriber.

A digital switch module for a time division digital switching system includes an encoding law conversion memory and a control memory. The encoding law conversion memory has previously stored therein conversion data for converting between different types of encoding laws. For example, the A-law and .mu.-law encoding laws set forth in CCITT Recommendation G.711 can be converted by a digital switch module according to the present invention. The encoding law conversion memory includes a read only memory having regions for conversion between A-law and .mu.-law encoded data and for nonconversion of both A-law and .mu.-law encoded data. The control memory designates which of the regions in the encoding law conversion memory is to be used during each time slot, thus dynamically controlling whether data passing through the digital switch module is converted or not.
