A sliding member includes a base material and an alloy layer that includes Cu as a main component and Bi and having a sliding surface formed on a side opposite to the base material. The alloy layer has a first region and a second region. The first region is set to a region taking up 30% of the thickness of the alloy layer which is from an interface in contact with the base material toward the sliding surface. The second region is set to a region taking up 10% of the thickness of the alloy layer which is from the sliding surface toward the base material. A larger number of Bi phases having larger cross-sectional areas are distributed in an arbitrary observation cross section as Bi phases included in the second region compared to Bi phases included in the first region.

An oil-based release agent of the present invention contains a petroleum-based hydrocarbon solvent (a) and a high temperature adhesive (b), is applied to a metal die used for die casting or casting, has high adhesion and high lubricity even with respect to a metal die at a high temperature particularly of 300&#xb0; C. or higher, and can prevent seizure. A TiAl intermetallic compound source and a boride which is less stable than TiB.sub.2 are mixed and melted, followed by solidification to form a TiB.sub.2 -dispersed TiAl-based composite material in which the TiB.sub.2 is contained in an amount of 0.3 to 10% by volume. In this process, the dispersed TiB.sub.2 particles become very fine, so that the hardness as well as the elongation and bending strength of the TiAl material are improved by the finely dispersed TiB.sub.2 particles.
