A cylinder block includes a water jacket surrounding a cylinder of an internal combustion engine and a water jacket spacer disposed inside the water jacket. In the cylinder block, a direction toward a center of the cylinder in a radial direction of the cylinder is defined as an inner side. A direction away from the center in the radial direction of the cylinder is defined as an outer side. The water jacket spacer includes a spacer plate and a conversion portion protruding from the spacer plate in the radial direction. The conversion portion has an action surface on which a pressure of coolant flowing through the water jacket acts. The conversion portion converts a force applied to the action surface by the pressure of the coolant into a force pushing the spacer plate toward the inner side.

Cylinder block and coupling method for water jacket spacer

A cooling structure of an engine includes a cylinder head and a coolant temperature sensor. The cylinder head gas a first water jacket for cooling a combustion chamber and a second water jacket for cooling an exhaust manifold. The cylinder head includes a joining portion where coolants from the first water jacket and the second water jacket join together. The joining portion has a first coolant passage. A second coolant passage is disposed downstream of the joining portion. The temperature sensing portion is disposed in the second coolant passage. A coolant outlet of the second water jacket is defined in the first coolant passage, and is located at a position on the cylinder head cover attachment surface side in the first coolant passage. The temperature sensing portion is located at a position on the cylinder block attachment surface side in the second coolant passage.

The method comprises the fist step of integrally forming a tubular spacer body with a peripheral wall and a connecting bridge by way of synthetic resin molding so that corresponding regions of the peripheral wall are connected to each other via the connecting bridge, and the second step of cooling the tubular spacer body, with the connecting bridge fixed thereto, to prevent deformation of the tubular spacer body during the cooling process, and the third step of removing the connecting bridge from the tubular spacer body.

The cylinder block includes an inter-bore region which is positioned in a vicinity of a boundary between the bore regions adjacent to each other, and a region other than the inter-bore region; and a cross sectional area of the space between the bore wall and the water jacket spacer in the inter-bore region is smaller than a cross sectional area of the space between the bore wall and the water jacket spacer in the region other than the inter-bore region.

Cooling apparatus of an internal combustion engine

A cooling apparatus of an internal combustion engine includes a closed deck-type cylinder block and an insert. The cylinder block includes a water jacket and an upper deck including a water hole formed therein. The insert is disposed in the water jacket and inserted into the water jacket through the water hole. The insert is fixed relative to the cylinder block at a water hole portion such that the insert is fixed in position in a flow direction of the cooling water. A stopper for preventing the insert from moving downstream in a flow direction of the cooling water may be formed, and the insert engages the stopper such that the insert is fixed in position in the flow direction of the cooling water.

In a cooling structure of a cylinder block, a cooling medium is supplied into the cylinder block in which a water jacket continuously extends around a bore wall, so as to uniform the bore wall temperature. The cooling structure sets a cooling characteristic of the water jacket based on at least one of variation in the bore wall temperature in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the borehole and variation in the temperature of the cooling medium flowing around the bore wall. The structure improves the cylinder bore cooling efficiency or the cooling uniformity.
