A circuit acquires, as white correction data, read image data generated by reading an image of a reference member when light of each of three colors of a light source is sequentially emitted to the reference member; acquires, as original document image data, the read image data generated by moving the image sensor and by reading, with an image sensor, an image of an original document; determines, as an original document non-existence position, a position of a pixel at which all of the original document image red, green, and blue data have a same value; converts the original document image data to output image data by performing shading correction on the original document image data based on white correction data; and replaces the output image data at the original document non-existence position with a value closer to data indicative of white color than a value of the output image data.

An image reading apparatus includes a gray reference member, a reading unit, an adjusting unit, a calibration unit, a storage unit, and a control unit. The control unit is configured to execute a first preprocessing and a second preprocessing. The first preprocessing includes: acquiring first black data from one line worth of image data; acquiring white data; calculating white-black difference data; acquiring first light gray data; and calculating first light gray-black difference data. The second processing includes: acquiring second black data from the one line worth of the image data; acquiring second light gray data; calculating second light gray-black difference data; calculating a change ratio by dividing the second light gray-black difference data by the first light gray-black difference data; and calculating calibration data by multiplying the white-black difference data by the change ratio. Shading of the image data is calibrated in response to the calibration data.

An image scanning apparatus, comprising: a gray reference member; a scanning unit; a signal conversion unit; a controller configured to: calculate white and black difference data of one line by subtracting first black data of one line from white data of one line; calculate a white and black difference maximum value and obtain a particular pixel position corresponding to the white and black difference maximum value; calculate light gray black difference data of one line by subtracting second black data of one line from light gray data of one line; calculate a gray white ratio by dividing the white and black difference maximum value at the particular pixel position by the light gray black difference data at the particular pixel position; and calculate reference data of one line by multiplying light gray data of one line by the gray white ratio.

In an image reading apparatus, an image reading unit performs a reading operation to generate image data defined by the reading region. The reading region includes a first region and a second region. The image data includes first data and second data. The first data corresponds to the first region. The second data corresponds to by the second region. The original document passes through the first region and not passes through the second region. A displacing unit displaces the opposing member farther away from the image reading unit when the original document is present in the reading region than a position of the opposing member when the original document is not present in the reading region. A controller determines that an edge reaches the reading position when the second data satisfies a prescribed condition.

In an image-reading device, when the reading unit generates the set of image data, the top side is generated at first and the bottom side is generated subsequently to the top side. The scanned image includes a document image corresponding to the document. The specifying unit, when the reading unit scans and reads a part of the document and generates a part of the set of image data including a part of the document image, specifies a target vertex that is positioned at topmost among at least one vertex of the part of document image. The estimating unit defines a reference position in the scanned image corresponding to a center of the conveying path in the width direction, and estimates a size of the document based on a length in the second direction between the target vertex and the reference position.
