An elevator apparatus has an actuating device including a sheave around which a rope engaged with an ascending and descending cage is wound and a driving section for rotating the sheave. The sheave is adapted to rotate to move the rope with its rotation. The actuating device is installed in a machine room provided on a top floor of a building in which the ascending and descending cage is disposed. The machine room faces with an elevator passage for the cage.

Elevator apparatus

A height of a case body () for covering an actuating device () is so designed as to be lower than a height of an operator. The actuating device () and the case body () will not largely project from a rooftop () of the building in which an ascending and descending cage () is disposed, and cost for the case body () can be lowered.

In a hoisting device for an elevator, a driving motor is made cylindrical, and a brake system is accommodated radially inwardly of the driving motor. The driving motor and the brake system overlap in a radial direction.
