An aircraft engine run-up hangar comprises a building defining a test chamber capable of receiving an aircraft therein, an air inlet structure, and an exhaust structure. The air inlet structure is formed in a front end part of a roof structure corresponding to a front end part of the building, the exhaust structure is connected to a rear end part of the building and defines an exhaust passage extending obliquely upward from the back end of the building, and one or a plurality of current deflecting members are disposed near a lower end of the air inlet structure to deflect air currents flowing through the air inlet structure into the building toward an aircraft housed in the building. A current-straightening structure is incorporated into the air inlet structure. A current-straightening space is defined under the air inlet structure. A first current-straightening member, a second current-straightening member, a third current-straightening member and a fourth current-straightening member are disposed in a region in and around the current-straightening space.

Aircraft engine run-up hangar

An aircraft engine run-up hangar comprises a building defining a test chamber capable of receiving an aircraft therein, an air inlet structure, and an exhaust structure. The air inlet structure is formed in a front end part of a roof structure corresponding to a front end part of the building. The exhaust structure is connected to a rear end part of the building and defines an exhaust passage extending obliquely upward from the back end of the building. A ceiling included in the building has an inclined section sloping down backward to straighten air currents, and a groove is formed in a middle part, with respect to width, of the inclined section to permit a vertical tail fin of an aircraft to pass when the aircraft is carried into or out of the test chamber.

Noise due to the rotation of the air propeller or fan of an air-cushion vehicle is reduced by: 1) reducing the cross-sectional area of the interior of a duct encompassing the fan on the downstream side relative to the upstream side; 2) using wide-chord fan blades of chords increasing from blade root to tip; 3) using a duct and a nose cone on the hub of the fan both having a sound-absoring structure; and 4) mounting the engine and the duct on a common rigid support base and reducing to a minimum the tip clearance between the tips of the fan blades and the duct inner wall surface.

Reduced-noise propulsion system of air-cushion vehicle

In an apparatus for cutting a work by an abrasive water jet containing abrasive particles, an abrasive suspension such that abrasive particles with an average size of up to about 100 microns are held in suspension in water is supplied to a jet nozzle assembly in which the abrasive suspension is induced by a high pressure ejected water and directed against the work. The ejected water is passed through an ejected water passageway to which is connected an abrasive water orifice of an abrasive water nozzle tip. The abrasive water orifice has an upstream tapered portion the diameter of which gradually increases toward an upstream opening at which the abrasive water orifice is connected smoothly to the downstream end of the ejected water passageway, whereby the flow of ejected water is streamlined. The abrasive suspension is supplied to, and merges with, the streamlined flow of the ejected water near the junction of the ejected water passageway and the abrasive water orifice, as an outer layer of the streamlined flow, whereby a dual-layer streamlined jet is obtained which enables fine cutting and also reduces wear of the nozzle tip.

Abrasive water jet cutting apparatus

For cutting sheet metal or other work by means of a jet of water containing abrasive particles, an abrasive water jet nozzle assembly is provided to which there are separately supplied highly pressurized water and an abrasive suspension. The abrasive suspension is such that abrasive particles with an average size of up to 100 microns are held in suspension in water. The abrasive suspension is introduced into the ejected water by virtue of a partial vacuum created in the nozzle assembly by the pressurized water. The nozzle assembly directs the resulting mixture as an abrasive water jet against the work for cutting thereof. Preferably, the abrasive water jet is recovered for recirculation back to the nozzle assembly as an abrasive suspension of controlled abrasive concentration. Various constructions of the nozzle assembly and various recovery systems are also disclosed.
