To provide a manufacturing method of a field emission cathode, which method exerts no adverse effect on element characteristics at the time when etching is performed with an ion beam. Manufacturing method of field emission cathode

An electric element is formed of a deposited film containing cesium (Cs) and has a plurality of conical projections on its surface. The projections are formed of cesium oxide and have an average height h in a range of 10 nm&#x2266;h&#x2266;500 nm. The electronic element is used as a cold cathode element, and has a high practicality, and for example, emits electrons sufficiently even with a low voltage applied thereto.

To provide a cold cathode element, which has a high practicability and is capable of emitting electrons sufficiently even at a low voltage applied. The cold cathode element emits electrons by application of an electric field to the element and is formed of an amorphous carbon film, the refractive index n of a surface of the film being equal to or larger than 2.5.

Cold cathode element

A cold cathode element for emitting an electron on application of an electric field. The element includes a diamond carbon film having a half width Hw of a photoelectron spectrum of a C,electron using an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, of 1.72 eV or more. The cold cathode element has the function of sufficiently emitting electrons even by applying a low voltage, and thus the element has high practical utility.

A powder material for use in resistance welding articles of aluminum comprises a mixture of 10-50% by weight of a liquid resin and the remaining proportion of a magnesium powder or a blend of magnesium and aluminum powders. Also a method of resistance welding articles of aluminum comprises the steps of preparing a pasty mixture by mixing in a predetermined amount of a liquid resin having a predetermined initial viscosity, a predetermined amount of a metal powder or a blend of metal and metal oxide powders, and inserting the pasty mixture between the mating weld surfaces of the aluminum articles. Only a small welding force and a low current will be required in producing a resistance weld connection between the aluminum articles with desired strength.

An aluminum weldment is produced by resistance-welding aluminum workpieces, and has a nugget formed between the aluminum workpieces which contains more magnesium than the base material of the aluminum workpieces. The nugget contains 5.about.17 wt % of magnesium which forms a solid solution with aluminum.

Workpieces of aluminum alloy are resistance-welded while a powdery mixture of magnesium and a metal oxide is being interposed between regions of workpieces of aluminum alloy which are to be joined to each other. The metal oxide may comprise at least one material selected from the group consisting of TiO.sub.2, SiO.sub.2, Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3, MnO.sub.2, Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3, CuO, and Ti.sub.2 O.sub.3 and the powdery mixture may include aluminum powder. The workpieces may be made of aluminum, stainless steel, or the like rather than aluminum alloy.

Method of resistance-welding workpieces of metal and resistance-welded

An Al-based intermetallic compound in which a eutectic crystal type Al-CuMn intermetallic compound dispersion phase is dispersed in an Al-Cu intermetallic compound matrix phase. The content of Mn as a eutectic crystal-forming element contained in the dispersion phase is set in a range of from 5% by weight (inclusive) to 30% by weight (inclusive). In the course of solidification of the Al-Cu-Mn intermetallic compound, an infinite number of dispersion phases are first crystallized, and the matrix phase is then crystallized. This ensures that the matrix phase is formed into a fine crystal structure due to hindrance of the growth thereof by the dispersion phase, leading to increases in hardness and toughness of the resulting Al-based intermetallic compound. In another embodiment, the Al-based intermetallic compound contains peritectic type Al-based intermetallic dispersion phase, such as formed by Ta, dispersed in the intermetallic compound matrix phase.
