The folding station of a rotary printing press has a folding cylinder on which the printed paper web is cut into sections. Mounted opposite the folding cylinder, a jaw cylinder has cut in its surface several jaw cavities each extending parallel to the jaw cylinder axis for receiving the midpart of the web section as the same is inserted therein by a folding blade on the folding cylinder. Each jaw cavity has mounted therein a series of fixed jaw parts and a series of movable jaw parts, the latter being jointly movable toward and away from the former for engaging and folding the midpart of the web section. The two outmost ones of the movable jaw parts are positioned closer to the fixed jaw parts than are the other, medial movable jaw parts, in order to more firmly engage the margins of the web section without causing ink offset between the contacting surfaces of the image areas of the web section.

A paper jam detection system for a folding machine includes an interval signal generator for generating an interval signal which assumes ON and OFF levels alternately according to cutting intervals of a cutting cylinder; a signature detection mechanism including reflection plates each having a light reflection surface and being arranged circumferentially at an outer circumferential surface portion of a jaw cylinder and a photoelectric sensor adapted to generate a reflection plate detection signal upon detection of the reflection plate; and a control unit for outputting a paper jam signal on the basis of the interval signal and the reflection plate detection signal.

Paper jam detection system for folding machine

An ink rail for a printing press has an ink rail body, a pedestal, a supporting member and a distance adjusting means. The ink rail body has a concave curved surface and also has an ink supplying surface having plural ink supplying ports opened to the concave curved surface. The pedestal supports the ink rail body in a supporting plane parallel to the joining face of the ink rail body. The supporting member supports the pedestal so as to be angularly displaced. The ink rail body can be reciprocated along the supporting plane of the pedestal. The joining face of the ink rail body approximately conforms to a plane including a rotation central line of the fountain roller, and the concave curved surface of the ink rail body can be approached and separated from the outer circumferential surface of the fountain roller.

A web width adjusting device comprises a pressure force applying unit for applying pressure force to one side surface of a paper web which is successively traveled through two or more printing sections. Further the web width adjusting device may also include a counter pressure applying unit to apply counter pressure to the other side surface of the paper web. The pressure applying unit (and the counter pressure applying unit) deformes the paper web in a wavy surface which causes the width of the paper web to be shortened. The adjusting factors for the web width are controlled by automatic control system which detects traveling condition of the paper web, the generation of shears in printing, etc.

A doctor blade apparatus is attached to a doctor whose doctor blade is pressed against a metering roller provided in an inking train of a printing apparatus and scrapes off an excess portion of ink transferred onto the circumferential surface of the metering roller. The doctor blade apparatus comprises a blade holder attached to a base which moves toward and away from the metering roller, a doctor blade held by the blade holder and extending along substantially the entire axial length of the metering roller, and an elasticity-modifying member which abuts, along the longitudinal direction of the doctor blade, a deflection-side surface of the doctor blade whose edge is pressed against the circumferential surface of the metering roller and deflects accordingly. The elasticity-modifying member is movable toward and away from the edge of the doctor blade. A reciprocal movement mechanism reciprocally moves the elasticity-modifying member toward and away from the edge of the doctor blade. A plurality of elasticity-modifying members may be provided for a single doctor blade along the axial direction of the metering roller and may be adapted to be movable independently of each other.

Doctor blade apparatus

An ink furnishing apparatus is capable of furnishing relative high viscosity ink in keyless ink furnishing. The apparatus operates in such a manner that an ink drawn from an ink fountain by rotation of a fountain roller and having a thickness corresponding to a first gap is supplied to the peripheral surface with compression by passing through a second gap, is provided fluidity by compression and disrupter through contact between the peripheral surfaces of an uneven surface roller and an intermediate roller and contact between the peripheral surfaces of the intermediate roller and a metering roller for supplying to the peripheral surface of the metering roller, the excess amount of ink on the peripheral surface of the metering roller is scraped off by a doctor means and returned to the ink fountain for supplying substantially uniform amount of ink at any axial position of the metering roller to a printing plate on a plate cylinder via the peripheral surface of the form roller.

Ink-furnishing apparatus

Disclosed is an ink furnishing apparatus in a lithographic printing press with a keyless system which performs printing by furnishing a relatively high viscous ink and dampening water to printing plates on a plate cylinder. A first shearing force is exerted on the ink upon drawing out the ink deposited on a peripheral surface of a fountain roller through a first gap between an ink fountain and the peripheral surface of the fountain roller by rotation of the fountain roller, and a second shearing force is exerted on the ink due to a difference of peripheral speeds of the fountain roller and a first intermediate roller upon transition of the ink from the peripheral surface of the fountain roller to the peripheral surface of the first intermediate roller across a second gap between the peripheral surface of the fountain roller and the peripheral surface of the first intermediate roller, thus, water is separated from the ink.

Ink-furnishing apparatus with dehydration

A web width adjusting device can adequately adjust the width of paper web which travels through at least two printing sections. The travelling web is sandwiched by a pair of wave forming devices including a plurality of fluid ejectors which are aligned in the width direction of the paper web. The fluid ejectors of one alignment face alternately the other alignment to alternately eject fluid to both sides of the web.

Width adjusting device and method for a paper web

A web width adjusting device can adequately adjust the width of paper web which is travelled through at least two printing sections. The travelling web is sandwitched by a pair of contact means including a plurality of contact members which are aligned in parallel to the axis of cylinders for driving the paper web. The contact members of one alignment are alternatively in contact with the web surface with respect to the other alignment.

An ink furnishing apparatus for a printing press for performing printing by furnishing an ink to a printing plate on a plate cylinder is selectively operable in an entire surface ink furnishing mode, in which a first gap is held fully opened, the doctor means is placed in contact with the metering roller, ink drawn through the fully opened first gap in a thickness corresponding to the first gap by rotation of the fountain roller, is furnished in an excess amount of ink onto the peripheral surface of the metering roller, the extra amount of ink on the peripheral surface is scraped off by means of the doctor means contacting with the peripheral surface of the metering roller to return to the ink fountain, and the ink is furnished onto a printing plate in a plate cylinder via the peripheral surface of the form roller in substantially uniform amount over the entire position along the axis of the metering roller, and in a local ink furnishing mode, in which the first gap is adjusted to be narrower with respect to divided divided zones by adjusting means, the doctor means is released away from the peripheral surface of the metering roller, the ink drawn from the ink fountain by rotation of the fountain roller per each separated zones in the desired thickness is furnished on the peripheral surface of the metering roller.

Width adjusting device and method for a paper web, and lithographic

A dampening arrangement for a printing press such as a lithographic press includes at least one solution receiving roller for receiving dampening solution and other rollers for conveying the dampening solution to a printing plate. The dampening arrangement is provided with a nozzle unit having a plurality of nozzles arranged substantially in parallel with the axis of the solution receiving roller and opposed to predetermined areas on the surface of the solution receiving roller, and a dampening solution supply source connected to the nozzle means for supplying the nozzles with a pressurized dampening solution. The distance between the nozzles and the surface of the solution receiving roller is automatically adjusted in accordance with the printing speed of the printing press. The printing press does not cause a printing defect due to excess supply of the dampening solution even when the printing press is operated at a high speed.

Dampening arrangement for a printing press

A rotary press includes a plurality of cylinders including plate cylinders arranged to perform printing. Each of the plate cylinders is supplied with ink through an inking unit which is associated with the plate cylinder. The inking unit is composed of at least one of form rollers, an ink metering roller which is in contact with an ink metering doctor blade, and a fountain roller partially dipped in an ink fountain pan. At least one of the inking units further includes an intermediate roller interposed between the upperstream side of the form roller(s) and the downstream side of the metering roller when the ink fountain pan is located above the plate cylinder to be supplies with ink through the inking unit. The intermediate roller can freely change the revolving direction of the metering roller so that the ink metering doctor blade can be arranged at any proper position where is no obstruction to adjust the contact angle of the doctor blade onto the mesh roller and repair or replace the doctor blade per se.
