A hard coating for a cutting tool being highly resistant to both wear and seizure; and a cutting tool coated with the hard coating. This hard coating is a multilayer film including two or more of the following layered in alternation: first coating layers including AgCu; and second coating layers including a nitride, oxide, carbide, carbonitride, or boride containing at least one element selected from among group IVA, VA, and VIA elements, aluminum, and silicon. Since the atomic proportion for the first coating layers is between 0.2 and 0.4, inclusive, the layering pitch of the first and second coating layers is between 0.2 and 100 nm, inclusive, and the total thickness is between 0.2 and 10.0 &#x3bc;m, inclusive, the coefficient of friction and cutting resistance can be reduced by the inclusion of silver in the coating, and provide a hard coating that exhibits superb lubricity and resistance to seizure.

It is provided a hard laminar coating consisting of a plurality of films including two kinds of films in the form of a first film and a second film having respective different compositions and alternately laminated on a surface of a base structure, wherein the first film is an oxide or an oxynitride of (TiB), while the second film is TiB.

A hard coating film formed on a surface of a predetermined member and having excellent wear resistance and adhesion resistance, the hard coating film includes: a three-layer structure composed of a third layer formed in contact with the surface of the predetermined member, a second layer formed on the third layer, and a first layer formed on the second layer to constitute the surface; the first layer being made of (CrB(SiC))(CON) [provided that SiC is silicon carbide, and a, b, c and d are atomic ratios in ranges of 0&#x2266;a&#x2266;0.2, 0.01&#x2266;b&#x2266;0.2, 0&#x2266;c&#x2266;0.5 and 0&#x2266;d&#x2266;0.3, respectively; the second layer being made of AlCrN or AlCrDN [provided that D includes either one kind of elements of a Group IVa, a Group Va and a Group VIa (except Cr) of a Periodic Table of Elements and Y, or SiC (silicon carbide)]; and the third layer being made of nitride, carbon nitride or carbide of metals including elements of one kind or more kinds of Al, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr and W.

A hard multilayer coating including: (a) a backing layer which is to be disposed on a body and which includes a TiAlN layer and a TiAlN+CrN mixture layer that are alternately superposed on each other; and (b) a CrN layer which is disposed on the backing layer and which provides an outer surface of the hard multilayer coating. The hard multilayer coating may further includes (c) an intermediate layer which is interposed between the backing layer and the CrN layer. Also disclosed is a hard multilayer coated tool including a tool substrate as the body which is coated with the hard multilayer coating.

A hard multilayer coating that is to be disposed on a body, including: (a) a first coating layer disposed to be held in contact with the body, the first coating layer consisting of TiAlCrXN(wherein 'X' represents carbon or oxygen, and 'a' represents a mixed crystal ratio satisfying 0.5&#x2266;a&#x2266;1); (b) a second coating layer disposed on the first coating layer, the second coating layer being provided by a mixture layer consisting of TiAlCrXN(wherein &#x201c;b&#x201d; represents a mixed crystal ratio satisfying 0.5&#x2266;b&#x2266;1) and TiAl(SiC)XN(wherein &#x201c;c&#x201d; represents a mixed crystal ratio satisfying 0.5&#x2266;c&#x2266;1), or provided by a multilayer including a first sublayer consisting of the TiAlCrXNand a second sublayer consisting of the TiAl(SiC)XN, which are alternately superposed on each other; and (c) a third coating layer disposed on the second coating layer and constituting an outermost layer of the hard multilayer coating, the third coating layer consisting of TiAl(SiC)XN(wherein &#x201c;d&#x201d; represents a mixed crystal ratio satisfying 0.5&#x2266;d&#x2266;1).

A hard coating that is to be disposed on a surface of a body includes a diamond layer which includes a plurality of diamond grains and is doped with boron, and an outer layer which includes an intermetallic compound and is disposed on the diamond layer by a physical vapor deposition method.

A hard multilayer coating which is to be disposed on a surface of a substrate, including at least one first coating layer and at least one second coating layer which are alternately superposed on each other, wherein each of the at least one first coating layer consists of (TiAl) (CN) wherein 0.20&#x2266;x&#x2266;0.60, 0&#x2266;y&#x2266;0.5, while each of the at least one second coating layer includes CrN, and wherein one of the at least one first coating layer constitutes an outermost layer of the hard multilayer coating.
