A display apparatus is constituted by a planar display device and a planar illumination device therefor. A lowering in light quantity at a periphery of the planar illumination device is prevented by inserting a reflection member, such as a reflection frame, having an inside reflection surface along the periphery of the illumination device, or a combination of a scattering means and a transparent sheet member between the display device and the illumination device. A plurality of the display apparatus may be combined to allow an associate movement thereof so as to constitute a composite display apparatus, such as a head-mount display.

In an image sensing and recording apparatus capable of recording image data on plural types of removable recording media, a recording speed of a recording medium for recording image data is recognized, then image sensing modes, including-a single image sensing mode and a sequential image sensing mode, which are set in advance are classified into available image sensing mode and unavailable image sensing mode on the basis of the recognized recording speed. Further, image sensing parameters, including numbers of pixels per frame and frame rates for the sequential image sensing mode, which are set in advance are also classified into available image sensing mode and unavailable image sensing mode on the basis of the recognized recording speed of the recording medium. A user selects and sets desirable image sensing mode among the available image sensing mode or modes and desirable image sensing parameter or parameters among the available image sensing parameter or parameters, then performs an image sensing operation.

An image pickup apparatus is provided which can obtain a high image quality by using a camera with a conventional field read type DSP. The image pickup apparatus has an image pickup element having a plurality of color filters disposed in a predetermined layout at respective pixel positions, a calculating and processing unit for performing calculation and processing by using two sets of adjacent pixel data in the vertical direction, at each line of image data generated by the image pickup element, and a luminance signal generating unit for generating a luminance signal by using an output of the calculating and processing unit.

In a still video camera or the like which employs a solid-state image sensor, such as a CCD, a first calculation of the amount of correlation in an AF sensor is executed by using a smaller number of pixels and a larger amount of shifting, and second and subsequent calculations of the amount of correlation are executed by using a larger number of pixels and a smaller amount of shifting. Accordingly, it is possible to reliably detect a large-defocus state through the first calculation, whereby it is possible to omit an unnecessary calculation to reduce the required calculation time. The automatic focusing device uses a phase difference detection method in which a focus state is detected by detecting the deviation between two incident images. The device includes two sensor portions for receiving two images which are each a variable in their image forming portions according to a focus state. The device also includes a correlation computing device for computing the correlation between signals from the two sensor portions by relatively shifting the output signals with a predetermined pitch. The device also includes a driver for driving a focus lens to the in-focus point according to the outputs of the computing device and also includes a control for changing the predetermined pitch with which the output signals of the two sensor portions are shifted.

An image signal recording and reproducing system which records on a recording medium one picture amount of high definition image signal composed of a plurality of different field image signals and is arranged as follows: in recording the field image signals in different areas on the recording medium respectively, a modulated carrier signal modulated with an information signal other than an image signal is recorded in a state of being multiplexed with one part of the field image signals; and a pilot signal for correcting time base variations is recorded in a state of being multiplexed with the other part of the field image signals. This arrangement enables the system to record and reproduce information other than the image signal and to reproduce an image with a high degree of fineness by accurately correcting time base variations occurring during recording and reproduction.

This system is arranged to selectively subject a color or monochrome image signal to the recording signal processing for recording on the recording medium, selectively multiplex a first pilot signal with the color image signal subjected to the recording signal processing or a second pilot signal different from the first pilot signal with the monochrome image signal subjected to the recording signal processing, record the thus-multiplexed signal on the recording medium, detect the pilot signal multiplexed with the signal recorded on the recording medium, discriminate whether the detected pilot signal is the first pilot signal or the second pilot signal, and separate the pilot signal multiplexed with the signal reproduced from the recording medium in accordance with the discrimination result, and correct the time-base variation of the signal reproduced from the recording medium by using the thus-separated pilot signal. In this arrangement, during recording, the pilot signal and the monochrome image signal can be multiplexed without the risk of influencing the image quality conveyed by the monochrome image signal, and the multiplexed signal is recorded on the recording medium. During reproduction, the pilot signal is used to correct the time-base variation of the signal reproduced from the recording medium.
