A printing apparatus including a printing unit configured with an ejection port surface for ejecting ink, a wiping unit configured to wipe the ejection port surface using a wiping member by relative movement with the printing unit, an application unit configured to apply a wiping liquid to the wiping member, a detection unit configured to detect the ink on the wiping member, and a control unit configured to cause the printing unit to print a predetermined pattern on a predetermined area of the wiping member and to cause the application unit to apply the wiping liquid, and, then, to cause the detection unit to detect the ink on the predetermined area.

The ink jet recording method according to the invention is characterized by that at least one of an ink and a surface treatment agent contains a resin that melts or softens at a fixing temperature by heat treatment; the surface treatment agent contains at least two kinds of particles different in particle size that do not melt at the fixing temperature; the particles contain first particles and second particles having a particle size larger than that of the first particles; and the second particles have a particle size falling within a range of more than 50 nm to less than 110 nm.

A transfer-type image recording method including the steps of applying a treatment liquid that causes aggregation of a component contained in ink to an image formation surface of an intermediate transfer member; applying ink to the surface to form an intermediate image; transferring the image from the surface to an recording medium; and applying an aqueous cleaning liquid to the surface. The treatment liquid contains a nonionic surfactant. In the step of applying a treatment liquid, T1&#x3c;Tc1 is satisfied, where T1 and Tc1 are respectively the temperature and cloud point of the treatment liquid. The image recording method includes a first process of applying a first black ink containing a pigment to a record medium; and, after the first process, a second process of applying a second black ink containing a pigment to the record medium such that the second ink at least partly overlaps the first black ink, in which the first black ink contains a salt containing at least one kind of cation selected from the group consisting of an alkali metal ion, an ammonium ion, and an organic ammonium ion and at least one kind of anion, and the static surface tension of the first black ink is higher than the static surface tension of the second black ink.

For that purpose, a group of pigment-based inks excellent in wettability with respect to the treatment liquid (small in contact angle with respect to the treatment liquid) are made relatively small in a proportion of the treatment liquid applied to a position to which the pigment-based ink concerned is applied. In a serial inkjet printing apparatus mounting a plurality of kinds of inks which have different properties and are arranged in parallel, high-speed bidirectional printing is realized without causing an influence of fixing period to prolong output time more than necessary. In order to realize the high-speed bidirectional printing, an order of executing forward print scanning and backward print scanning is controlled so as to further reduce a sum of time required to form an image and time required to wait for the formed image to be fixed. Thus, also in the bidirectional printing, between a forward direction and a backward direction, print scanning in a direction having shorter fixing period is set prior to that in the other direction. Consequently, total time required for image output can be further reduced.
