A side wall construction for a continuous belt caster includes a metallic side wall body and a refractory layer attached on the central portion of the side wall body. The metallic side wall body has side edge portion extending substantially in flush with the the surface of the refractory layer. The refractory layer is formed with a center projection of essentially triangular cross-section. The height of the peak of the projection is gradually decreased toward downstream of transfer direction of the liquidus and solidus metal. On the other hand, it may be possible to formulate the refractory layer as double layer construction of a heat insulating refractory layer and a wear-resistantive refractory layer.

Side wall construction for continuous belt caster

A mold additive for use in continuous casting, which includes a base material having a chemical composition of CaO--BaO--SiO.sub.2 --F system, and contains 2-15% by weight in total of at least one carbonate of alkali and alkaline earth metals, 2-30% by weight in total of at least one fluoride of alkali and alkaline earth metals and 0.2-10% by weight of carbon, and, if necessary, 2-10% by weight in total of at least one oxide of Fe, Mn and Ni, and has a solidification temperature of not more than 900.degree. C. and a viscosity at 1,300.degree. C. of not more than 3 poises. The base material has a weight ratio of (CaO+BaO)/SiO.sub.2 of 0.6-2.5 and contains not less than 2% by weight of BaO and 2-15% by weight of F.

Mold additives for use in continuous casting

A continuous casting apparatus for the production of cast sheets having a casting space defined by a pair of opposed endless belts and a pair of side plates arranged near the side edge portions of the belts while being brought into intimate contact therewith and designed to be converged toward a drawing direction. In this apparatus, a filmy water flow-forming pad arranged behind each of the belts, and each of the side plates are so profiled that the casting space inclusive of the tapered portion depicts a smooth curve at at least a transition area from the taper end portion to a constant thickness portion.

Continuous casting apparatus for the production of cast sheets

Control method for preventing a breakout or/and a crack of the slab of continuous casting equipment. Heat flux waveforms or heat flux values commensurate to extracted heat values at various positions of a mold are measured by means of thin plate type surface heat flux meters (14, 14x, 14y, 14z) provided at various positions on side shell plate (11, 11c) of the mold (10). When an abnormality or a deviation from a target value is detected, pouring rate is changed, scope of supply, brands and the like of mold powder are controlled, or taper value of short sides of the mold is controlled, so that a breakout or/and a crack of the slab is prevented.

Method of controlling continuous casting equipment

The width of a slab can be easily increased during a continuous casting operation by a simple method, wherein casting of a molten steel is temporarily stopped during the continuous casting operation, the narrow side of a casting mold is moved to a predetermined width, corresponding to the increased width to be of the slab, to form a space between the narrow side of the mold and the solidified shell of a slab, a closing member having a width 1-5 mm smaller than the increased width of the slab, and a cooling and sealing material are inserted into the space to form a clearance of 1-5 mm between the closing member and the narrow side of the mold, and the casting of the molten steel is again started.

Method of increasing casting width for a slab during a continuous

A mold additive for use in the continuous casting is disclosed, which comprises a base material for slag having a chemical composition of CaO--SiO.sub.2 --Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 system, a flux and a carbonaceous aggregate. The mold additive contains 0.5-2.0% by weight of carbon black and 1-4% by weight of activated carbon with an average particle size of not more than 10 .mu.m as the carbonaceous aggregate, and has a bulk density of not more than 0.9 g/cm.sup.3.

The method of sequential continuous-casting of the different grades of steel according to the present invention comprises the steps of: stopping the pouring of a first grade of molten steel into a mold; immersing a cooling material consisting of a steel structure slightly smaller than the inner cross-sectional area of the mold by way of guiding jigs fastened to said cooling material; forming a solidified phase around said cooling material; and merging said solidified phase in a solidified shell developed from the wall of the mold to form a solidified layer shutting the upper portion off the lower portion of the first grade of molten steel. According to the method, the pouring the second grade of molten steel is started before the solidifed layer for shutting the upper portion off the lower portion of the first grade of molten steel as described above and the surface of the first grade of molten steel is solidified completely, and at the same time, the drawing of the cast slab is started again and the change-over to the normal continuous casting of the second grade of molten steel is effected.
