A torque converteris a device for transmitting torque by fluid, and includes a front cover, an impeller, a turbine, and a stator. The impeller, the turbineand the statorconstitute a fluid operating chamberhaving a torus shape. Flattening (L/D1) is less than or equal to 0.18, wherein D1 is an outer diameter of the fluid operating chamberand L is the axial direction length of the fluid operating chamber. In the impeller shell, a surfaceon which the impeller bladesare fixed has an impeller straight portionshowing a straight line in a cross section. In the turbine shell, a surfaceon which the turbine bladesare fixed has a turbine straight portionshowing a straight line in a cross section.

A diameter ratio (D/D) of an inner diameter Dof the torus to an outer diameter Dof the torus is 0.45 or greater. The impeller includes an impeller core, and an impeller axial length ratio (Lp/D) of an axial length Lp of the impeller core to the outer diameter Dof the torus is in a range between 0.030 to 0.045. In a torque converter provided with a lockup device, performance of a torsion spring is improved, preferably by increasing its size, while suppressing an increase of an axial dimension of the torque converter. The torque converter includes a toric fluid actuating portion having an impeller, a turbine, and a stator. A ratio (D /D ) of an inside diameter D to an outside diameter D of the fluid actuating portion is equal to or greater than 0.61.

A directional control valve is composed of a cylinder and a spool located therein so as to be slidably shiftable. The cylinder is formed to have a first input port, a second input port and a control port to which hydraulic fluid is supplied from a fluid pump; a first output port for supplying hydraulic fluid for clutch operation to a power-disconnection clutch, and a second output port for supplying hydraulic fluid for lubrication to the clutch. Positioning of the spool is shiftable between a first position wherein the first input port and the first output port are communicated, and a second position wherein the second input port and the second output port are communicated, according to hydraulic pressure via the control port.

A lock-up device is used for a torque converter comprising a front cover connected to an input-side rotation member, an impeller fixed to the front cover, and a turbine provided opposite to the impeller and connected to an output-side member. This lock-up device comprises a plate member and a piston. The above described plate member is connected to the output-side member and located between the turbine and the inner wall of the front cover, and can be brought into contact with the inner wall of the front cover. The above described piston which is connected to the front cover so as not to be relatively rotatable is for pressing the plate member against the inner wall of the front cover.
