A dry analysis element for the quantitative analysis of an analyte contained in whole blood comprises a layer exhibiting volume filtration function and a detection layer. The layer exhibiting volume filtration function is made of a cloth selected from microfibrous cloths each having an average fiber diameter of from 0.1 to 10 .mu.m or a napped cloth having an average of from 1 to 30 .mu.m. In a first preferred embodiment, the layer exhibiting volume filtration function is composed of a non-woven cloth having a density of from 0.01 to 0.2 g/cm.sup.3 and made of fibers each having an average fiber diameter of from 0.2 to 10 .mu.m. In a second preferred embodiment, the layer exhibiting volume filtration function is composed of a napped cloth having a fiber density per cm.sup.2 of from 7.0.times.10.sup.3 to 8.2.times.10.sup.6, each of the napped fibers having an average diameter of from 1 to 30 microns and an average nap length of 0.5 to 5.0 mm. In a third preferred embodiment, the layer exhibiting volume filtration function is composed of a cloth having a porosity of from 45 to 70% and made of micro filaments each having an average filament diameter of from 0.1 to 7 .mu.m.

Provided are napped fabrics with naps comprising a tapered fiber of a sheath-core polyester fiber with the sheath component having larger alkali hydrolysis rate than the core component, the core of the tapered fiber being exposed at its end part and having smooth surface, the sheath of at least the tapered part having minutely roughened surface. The napped fabrics are of high quality, having good hand and excellent color developing property without unnatural luster such as dark fading or white appearance and being difficult to soil, and are hence markedly suited for car seat cover.

Provided is a sheath-core composite polyester fiber with both the core and the sheath comprising polyesters and at least one end thereof is tapered to its tip. Two groups of recesses having different diameter ranges are formed on the exposed core of the tapered part and on the surface of the sheath, respectively. Napped fabrics with raised fibers comprising the composite fibers have good hand with stiffness (KOSHI), excellent color developing property and color depth when dyed. The fabrics have no luster difference or color difference such as dark fading and white appearance and, besides, produce no whitened seams, so that they are suitable for car-seat covers and like uses.

Provided is a composite fiber comprising an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer and a thermoplastic polymer. The composite fiber is acetalized with a dialdehyde such that the ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer has a melting point in a specified range, whereby the composite fiber does not cause serious stickings between the filaments when dyed, sewn or ironed and is excellent in hydrophilic property, resistance to soiling, antistatic property and the like. The composite fiber is thus very suitable for clothing use.

The present invention provides shaped articles incorporating mixed particulate metals comprising fine particles of a first metal or a compound thereof capable of releasing a metal ion having a first antimicrobial function, and a second metal having an ionization tendency different from that of the first metal or a compound thereof capable of releasing a metal ion having a second antimicrobial function, together with a polyester compound having specific properties, dispersed therein, and thus being capable of effectively releasing gradually over a long period a trace amount of the metal ions having an antimicrobial function from the particulate metals and maintaining an excellent antimicrobial function. The fibers according to the present invention also have excellent durability of the antimicrobial function and have excellent mildew resistance, in repeated washings and in service.

A plasma treating apparatus for a sheet-like structure which comprises a generally drum-shaped first discharge electrode assembly rigidly mounted on a rotary shaft which extends through a vacuum vessel, the rotary shaft providing rotation to the electrode assembly. The sheet-like structure is adapted to follow the outer periphery of the first discharge electrode assembly. The apparatus further comprises a second discharge electrode assembly disposed within the vacuum chamber so as to confront the first discharge electrode assembly. The vacuum vessel is electrically insulated from an electric circuit which is connected to both of the first and second discharge electrode assemblies. Insulating members are also interposed between a cylindrical body of the drum of the first discharge electrode assembly and the rotary shaft to electrically insulate the first electrode assembly from the rotary shaft.

A sheet-like structure comprises a fibrous structure containing not less than 10 weight percent of disperse dye-polyester fibers. At least one side of the structure is coated with a resin layer. A thin polymer film layer having a thickness of 100-10,000 angstroms is formed on at least one side of the resin layer. The structure is effective in preventing disperse dye migration and sublimation.

Sheet-like structures and process for producing the same

A fibrous structure having a roughened surface and a process for producing the same are disclosed. Upon dying, the fibrous structure is greatly improved in color depth. In addition, it gives one a more scrooping feeling than silk does. The fibrous structure has surface irregularities whose structure is such that the distance between the adjacent projections is 0.01 to 0.7 micrometer and the area of the concave portions is 0.1 to 0.8 square micrometer in 1 square micrometer of the irregularities. The fibrous structure is produced by the steps of attaching fine particles to the fiber surface in an amount of 0.001 to 10 wt % based on the fiber, said fine particles having an average primary particle diameter smaller than 0.5 micrometer and being more inert than the fiber-constituting polymer base material to low-temperature plasma, and subjecting the fiber, to which said fine particles have been attached, to low-temperature plasma, thereby forming projections which are larger than the average primary particle diameter.

A surface-modified synthetic fiber is provided by plasma irradiating a synthetic fiber containing fine particles. Recesses and projections are formed on the surface of the fiber. The recesses are formed by being etched with plasma in the portion not shielded by the fine particles; the projections are formed by not being etched in the portion shielded by the fine particles. The resulting fiber has an irregular surface such that the distance between the center points of adjacent projections is between approximately 0.03 and 1 microns and the number of projections is between approximately 1 and 200 per square micron.

A polyester fiber having an irregularly uneven random surface, having nonuniform recesses and projections forming said surface satisfying the requirement 0.2 micron&lt;X&lt;0.7 micron where X is the planar distance from the deepest point of a recess to the deepest point of another recess located adjacently thereof in the circumferential direction perpendicular to the fiber axis and being present at the density of 10 to 50 in each planar distance of 10 microns in the circumferential direction perpendicular to the fiber axis. Said recesses and projections constituting the random surface have additional microfine recesses and projections within the size range of 50 to 200 millimicrons. A method for producing a polyester synthetic fiber having the above surface structure is also described. The fiber thus obtained features excellent dyeability, i.e. the development and depth of color, and an excellent surface hand.
