Red pixels (R), blue pixels (B) and green pixels (G) are formed in parallel. First columnar spacersand second columnar spacersare formed on a first substrate. The distance between the first substrate and a second substrate in a normal state is determined by the first columnar spacers. The diameter of a light blocking film corresponding to each first columnar spaceris greater than the diameter of a light blocking film corresponding to each second columnar spacer. The first columnar spaceris not formed at a boundary between a green pixel (G) and a red pixel (R) or a boundary between a green pixel (G) and a blue pixel (B). The second columnar spaceris formed at a boundary between pixels irrespective of the pixel color. Thus, appropriate color balance can be attained with ease without having a drop in the luminance.

To provide a liquid crystal display device capable of controlling deterioration of contrast even in the case where an opening is formed in an organic flattened film and the film has unevenness. In the liquid crystal display device that includes a TFT substrate, a CF substrate, and liquid crystal sandwiched between the TFT substrate and the CF substrate and that drives the liquid crystal with a lateral electric field, the TFT substrate has the organic flattened film in which a through hole for contacting a source electrode of the TFT and a pixel electrode and a sectional shape of the through hole is asymmetrical between a side on which the pixel electrode extends and the other side.

Liquid crystal display device having asymmetrical through hole

In a liquid crystal display device it is desirable to test in the state of TFT substrates, without reducing the number of TFT substrates to be obtained from one mother TFT substrate, and without increasing the overall size of the TFT substrates. Test terminals are formed on the outside of terminals for driving the liquid crystal display device. The test terminals of the specific TFT substrate are formed in another TFT substrate just below the specific TFT substrate. The area in which the test lines are formed is a space in which a sealing material is formed, between the display area and an end of the lower TFT substrate. Thus, the size of the TFT substrates is not actually increased. A test line area is not separately formed and not discarded, so that the number of TFT substrates to be obtained from one mother TFT substrate is not reduced.

Display device

A shielding metal of an adjacent liquid crystal panel separated from a mother substrate remains at an outer end part of a terminal portion of a liquid crystal display panel. The shielding metal has a two-layered structure including first shielding metals arranged at predetermined pitches and second shielding metals arranged at predetermined pitches. An insulating layer is provided between the first and the second shielding metals. This makes it possible to prevent short-circuit in wirings on a flexible wiring substrate even if the wirings on the flexible wiring substrate are brought into contact with the first or the second shielding metal.

Liquid crystal display device and method of manufacturing the same

A display device includes a substrate, a display region having pixels on the substrate, a drive circuit element mounted on a peripheral portion of the substrate, a plurality of terminal portions formed on the peripheral portion and arranged on a mounting portion of the drive circuit element, and a plurality of wiring lines prolonged from the terminal portions to the outside of the mounting portion of the substrate. The terminal parts are arranged to two lines of the plurality of wiring lines along one end of the mounting portion, a plurality of bumps connected to each of the terminal portions by an anisotropic conductive film are formed on the plane facing the terminal portion of the drive circuit element, a part of the plurality bumps include a first bump and a second bump which is adjoined close to the first bump.

To implement a support layer which is smaller than in the prior art with a stable contact area with the spacers in columnar form even in the case where the spacers in columnar form are miniaturized. A liquid crystal display device is provided with: a first substrate; a second substrate; and a liquid crystal display panel having liquid crystal sandwiched between the above described first substrate and the above described second substrate, and characterized in that the above described second substrate has spacers in columnar form, the above described first substrate has a support layer in a region where the above described spacers in columnar form are formed, the above described support layer has: a first layer extending in a first direction; and a second layer formed on the above described first layer and extending in a second direction which crosses the above described first direction at an angle of 70&#xb0; to 110&#xb0;, and the surface of the above described spacers in columnar form on the above described first substrate side faces the portion where the above described first layer of the above described support layer and the above described second layer overlap. The above described first layer and the above described second layer of the above described support layer are rectangular in a plan view. The above described first layer is a semiconductor layer and the above described second layer is a metal layer.

Liquid crystal display device having columnar spacers formed on first and second elongated support layers

In a liquid crystal display device, each pixel region formed over a liquid crystal side of one substrate out of respective substrates which are arranged to face each other with liquid crystal therebetween includes pixel electrodes to which a video signal is supplied from a drain signal line through a switching element driven in response to a scanning signal from a gate signal line and capacitive elements which are formed between the pixel electrodes and a capacitive signal line by way of a dielectric film. In such a constitution, the pixel region is divided into a plurality of regions, and video signals are supplied to respective pixel electrodes and capacitive elements in respective regions through paths which are branched from the switching element.

In a liquid crystal display device having a first planar electrode and a second electrode formed on the first electrode with an insulating film in between, the response time of a liquid crystal is made shorter than that in a related art. A liquid crystal display device includes: a first substrate having a first electrode, an insulating film provided in an upper layer than the first electrode, and a second electrode provided in an upper layer than the insulating film; a second substrate; and a liquid crystal sandwiched between the first substrate and the second substrate. The liquid crystal display device drives the liquid crystal by generating an electric field by the first electrode and the second electrode. The second electrode has plural slits closed at both ends, the first electrode is a planar electrode superimposed on the plural slits, and, given that the length of the respective slits is Ls, the length Ls of the respective slits satisfies 12 &#x3bc;m&#x2266;Ls&#x2266;30 &#x3bc;m, more preferably, 12&#x3bc;m&#x2266;Ls&#x2266;20 &#x3bc;m.

Measures are taken against the problem that a conductive matter is attached to an organic film in the vicinity of terminal sections of a display device, which causes electrical connection between the terminals when the terminals are connected to a flexible wiring board. An organic passivation film is formed to the vicinity of the end of the substrate, and a conductive matter is attached to the edge of the organic passivation film. The conductive attachment is divided by extending a bridge section of the organic passivation film to the end of the substrate. Thus, even if a flexible wiring board is connected thereto, the electrical connection between the terminals can be prevented.
