A porous carbon that can sufficiently adsorb water vapor on a high humidity side is provided. A porous carbon is characterized by having mesopores and micropores and having a water vapor adsorbed amount ratio, as defined by the following expression (1), of 1.8 or higher. It is particularly preferable that the water vapor adsorbed amount ratio as defined by the following expression (1) be 2.0 or higher. It is also preferable that the water vapor adsorbed amount at a relative humidity of 70% be 50 mg/g or greater.Water vapor adsorbed amount ratio=water vapor adsorbed amount at a relative humidity of 90%/water vapor adsorbed amount at a relative humidity of 70%.&#x2003;&#x2003;(1)

A carbon material and a method of manufacturing the carbon material are provided. By affixing diamond particles onto a carbonaceous substrate in a condition in which etching caused by hydrogen radicals is unlikely to occur, the substrate etching rate can be suppressed, and the carbon material is allowed to have a diamond thin film having excellent adhesion capability. The carbon material has a carbonaceous substrate showing a weight decrease under a diamond synthesis condition, diamond particles disposed on a surface of the carbonaceous substrate, and a diamond layer having the diamond particles as seeds. The weight of the diamond particles per unit area is set to from 1.0&#xd7;10g/cmto less than 3.0&#xd7;10g/cm.

A carbonaceous substrate of the present invention is such that an X-ray diffraction pattern thereof is a complex profile and includes at least two (002) diffraction lines; and the substrates contains crystallites with different interlayer spacings. Further, in the X-ray diffraction pattern, (002) diffraction lines between 2&#x3b8;=10&#xb0; and 2&#x3b8;=30&#xb0; have an asymmetric shape; and the X-ray diffraction pattern includes at least two pattern components which are a diffraction line whose center is at 2&#x3b8;=26&#xb0; and a diffraction line whose center is at a lower angle than 2&#x3b8;=26&#xb0;. Further, the carbonaceous substrate contains crystals wherein the periodic distance dis 0.34 nm or more and the crystallite size Lcis 20 nm or less based on the X-ray diffraction lines. An electrodes for fluorine electrolysis of the present invention includes the carbonaceous substrate on which a conductive diamond thin film is formed.
