[Problem] To provide a film that has excellent water solubility which changes little over time even when the film touches a chemical, a package and a liquid transfer printing film each using the film and a liquid transfer printing method using the liquid transfer printing film. [Means for Resolution] A film containing a hydroxymethyl group-containing vinyl alcohol-based polymer containing a vinyl alcohol unit and a unit structure represented by the following formula (1), a package and a liquid transfer printing film each using the film and a liquid transfer printing method using the liquid transfer printing film.

In a method for hydraulic transfer printing, comprising floating a transfer sheet comprising a polyvinyl alcohol polymer film and a print layer formed thereon on a surface of an aqueous solution while directing the print layer upward, and then pressing an article against the surface of the aqueous solution to transfer the print layer to the article, wherein the surface tension of the aqueous solution is adjust to 45 mN/m or less and the extension ratio of the transfer sheet is adjusted to 1.30 or less during the transfer. This makes it possible to transfer a high-definition print pattern to the surface of an article having irregularities or a curved surface.

Method of hydraulic transfer and hydraulic transfer base film

The invention provides a continuous method for producing polarizing films that includes a step of monoaxially stretching a polyvinyl alcohol film having a width of at least 2 m in an aqueous boric acid solution, wherein the polyvinyl alcohol film is stretched on the condition that it satisfies the following formulae (1) and (2):A&#x2267;5 (m)&#x2003;&#x2003;(1)&#x2267;0.5 (min) (2)wherein A indicates the stretching distance (m); and B indicates the stretched film speed (m/min). The method gives wide polarizing films of wide and good polarization performance, and the polarizing films thus produced are useful as the material for polarizers that may be in large-size liquid-crystal displays.

Process for producing polarizing film

A polyvinyl alcohol polymer film includes a polyvinyl alcohol polymer and a plasticizer selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, glycerin, propylene glycol, diethylene glycol, diglycerin, triethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol, and trimethylolpropane. The amount of the polyvinyl alcohol polymer eluted when a 10 cm square of the polyvinyl alcohol polymer film is left in 1 liter of water of 50&#xb0; C. for 4 hours is from 1 to 100 ppm. The film has only a small number of defects and is useful as raw material for producing a polarization film.

The invention is a film of a vinyl alcohol polymer that contains from 0.01 to 20 mol % of cationic group-containing units and contains from 0.5 to 24 mol % of &#x3b1;-olefin units having at most 4 carbon atoms. The polyvinyl alcohol film gives polarizing films and polarizer which are resistant to water and have good polarizing properties and which are free from a problem of irregular coloration.

The invention is a polyvinyl alcohol film having an YI value of at most 20, which is formed of a modified polyvinyl alcohol having a degree of polymerization of from 1500 to 5000, an ethylene unit content of from 1 to 4 mol % and a 1,2-glycol bond content of at most 1.4 mol %. The polyvinyl alcohol film gives polarizing films that contain no impurities and have good polarization performance, durability and hue stability.

The present invention provides a water-soluble film which comprises a modified polyvinyl alcohol containing an N-vinylamide monomer unit in an amount of 1 to 10 mole percent, and a carboxyl group and a lactone group in a total amount of 0.020 to 4.0 mole percent in the molecule, and having a degree of polymerization of 300 to 3000, and a degree of hydrolysis of 75 to 99.5 mole percent. Further, the present invention provides a package obtained by packaging an acidic substance, a chlorine-containing compound, or the like using the water-soluble film.

Difference in retardation between two points separated by 1 cm along the TD direction of a polyvinyl alcohol polymer film is 5 nm or less. The length of a surface for drying a polyvinyl alcohol polymer film is 3 m to 200 m, and the water content of the polyvinyl alcohol polymer film when peeled after passing through the drying surface is 50% by weight or less, in film formation.

A water-soluble resin composition is provided which comprises (i) 100 parts by weight of a polyvinyl alcohol polymer having a 1,2-glycol linkage content of at least 1.8 mole percent and a degree of hydrolysis of at least 90 mole percent, (ii) 1 to 50 parts by weight of a plasticizer and (iii) 5 to 50 parts by weight of a monosaccharide and/or a polysaccharide, optionally together with (iv) 1 to 20 parts by weight of an inorganic filler. Also provided is a water-soluble resin composition which comprise (i&prime;) 100 parts by weight of a polyvinyl alcohol polymer having a 1,2-glycol linkage content of at least 1.8 mole percent and a degree of hydrolysis of 92 to 99 mole percent, (ii&prime;) 1 to 50 parts by weight of a plasticizer and (iv&prime;) 1 to 20 parts by weight of an inorganic filler, optionally together with (iii&prime;) 5 to 50 parts by weight of a monosaccharide and/or polysaccharide. Further provided are water-soluble films produced by using those water-soluble resin compositions.
