A cartridge includes a tape-shaped nonwoven fabric, a reel on which the tape-shaped nonwoven fabric is wound, and a case that accommodates the reel. A basis weight of the tape-shaped nonwoven fabric is equal to or less than 25 c/mand an average fiber diameter of the tape-shaped nonwoven fabric is equal to or less than 11 μm.

The average thickness of the magnetic recording medium is 5.6 &#x3bc;m or less.

A tape-shaped magnetic recording medium is provided with a base, an underlayer provided on the base, and a magnetic layer provided on the underlayer including magnetic powder including hexagonal ferrite. The underlayer and the magnetic layer include lubricant. The magnetic layer includes a surface provided with a large number of holes, and arithmetic average roughness Ra of the surface is 2.5 nm or smaller. A BET specific surface area of a whole of the magnetic recording medium in a state in which the lubricant is removed is 3.5 m/mg or larger. A square ratio in a vertical direction is 65% or larger, an average thickness of the magnetic layer is 90 nm or smaller, and an average thickness of the magnetic recording medium is 5.6 &#x3bc;m or smaller.

An object is to provide a magnetic recording medium having excellent traveling stability and a thin total thickness. The present technology provides a tape-shaped magnetic recording medium including: a magnetic layer; an underlayer; a base layer; and a back layer, in which a surface on a side of the magnetic layer has a kurtosis of 3.0 or more, a surface on a side of the back layer has a kurtosis of 2.0 or more, the surface on the magnetic layer side has arithmetic average roughness Rof 2.5 nm or less, the base layer includes a polyester as a main component, the magnetic recording medium has an average thickness tof 5.6 &#x3bc;m or less, the magnetic recording medium includes a lubricant, the lubricant includes a fatty acid and a fatty acid ester, and a mass ratio between the fatty acid and the fatty acid ester extracted with hexane satisfies fatty acid/fatty acid ester&#x2264;0.6, and the magnetic recording medium has pores, and the pores have an average diameter of 6 nm or more and 11 nm or less when the diameters of the pores are measured in a state where the lubricant has been removed from the magnetic recording medium and the magnetic recording medium has been dried.

A non-contact communication medium according to an embodiment of the present technology is a non-contact communication medium for a recording medium cartridge, including: a circuit component; a support substrate; and an antenna coil. The circuit component has a memory unit capable of storing management information relating to the recording medium cartridge therein. The support substrate supports the circuit component. The antenna coil includes a coil unit that is electrically connected to the circuit component and formed on the support substrate, an inductance value of the coil unit being 0.3 &#x3bc;H or more and 2.0 &#x3bc;H or less.

A surface of the back layer opposite to the substrate has a kurtosis of 2.0 or more. On a surface of the magnetic layer, recesses having a depth of 20% or more of the average thickness of the magnetic layer are formed at a ratio of 10 or more and 200 or less per 1600 &#x3bc;m. A surface of the magnetic layer has arithmetic average roughness Ra of 2.5 nm or less. The entire magnetic recording medium has a BET specific surface area of 3.5 m/g or more in a state where the lubricant has been removed from the magnetic recording medium and the magnetic recording medium has been dried.

A magnetic recording medium that can exhibit good traveling performance during use is provided. A magnetic recording tape having a plural-layer structure including at least a magnetic layer is provided. The tape has a total thickness of 5.6 &#x3bc;m or smaller, and includes a plurality of indentations disposed in a surface of the magnetic layer. A value obtained by dividing a depth D1 of each indentation with a thickness D2 of the magnetic layer is 15% or greater. The magnetic layer includes a plurality of indentations formed therein, a plurality of the indentations each has a depth of 20% or greater of the thickness of the magnetic layer, and the number of the indentations is 55 or more per 6,400 &#x3bc;mof a surface area of the magnetic layer.
