A device includes an airbag and an outer cover. The airbag is accommodated between a body and a rear seat of a vehicle. The outer cover covers a space defined between the body and the rear seat from the passenger compartment and is exposed to the passenger compartment. When an impact greater than a predetermined level is applied to the vehicle body, a thin portion of the outer cover is ruptured by the pressure from inflation of the airbag. This forms an opening in the outer cover. The airbag is then inflated into the passenger compartment from the opening of the outer cover. The end at the part of the outer cover corresponding to the opening and facing toward the rear seat is entirely formed by the end of the outer cover.

Side airbag device

In a head protecting air bag device according to the present invention, a clip for attaching an attaching portion of an air bag to a fixing part on the side of a vehicle body includes a clip body and a locking part. The clip body has a shaft having a pair of securing legs protruded. The pair of securing legs are inserted in the fixing slot of the fixing part from an in-vehicle side via the attaching slot of the attaching portion and secured to the peripheral edge on an out-vehicle side of the fixing slot. The shaft is composed of a shell member of a metallic plate on the outer periphery and a core member of synthetic resin on the inner periphery. The core member is arranged on the opposite sides of a pair of securing lugs of the shell member. The core member has an inserting space in which a spacer of the locking part is inserted between the pair of securing lugs. The spacer limits the mutual approaching of the pair of securing legs. In the head protecting air bag according to this invention, using the clip, the attaching portion of the air bag can be easily attached to the vehicle body side with assured attaching stability.

Head protecting airbag device

The head-protecting airbag according to the present invention is formed by hollow-weaving method, and includes a gas admissive portion inflatable with inflation gas to separate its vehicle's inner wall and vehicle's outer wall, and a non-admissive portion admitting no inflation gas. The non-admissive portion includes mounting portions arranged in the upper edge of the airbag, and a marginal portion located around the gas admissive portion. The non-admissive portion partially has a two-ply structure where the hollow-woven cloth material separates into vehicle's inner cloth part and outer cloth part from the marginal portion having a one-ply structure. At least one of the mounting portions is formed by folding back a region of the two-ply cloth part to have a four-ply structure. The head-protecting airbag of the present invention remains stably attached to the vehicle body without breakage of the mounting portions even when a strong tension force rapidly and directly acts on mounting-hole peripheries of the mounting portions upon airbag deployment.

Head-protecting airbag

An air bag system of the invention is attached using an attaching piece portion and includes an air bag which is inflated for deployment when an inflating gas flows thereinto. The air bag is attached to an inner panel by attaching an attaching bracket having a pair of strengthening plates provided on front and back sides of the attaching piece portion with a bolt as a fastening means. A through hole in the attaching piece portion is set to such a size that a location constituting a circumferential edge is disposed at a position deflected from an area between a head portion of the bolt and the inner panel when a fastening stem portion of the bolt is fastened to the inner panel. The bolt is fastened to the inner panel in such a state that only the attaching bracket is interposed between the inner panel and the head portion.

Air bag system

In the head-protecting airbag device according to the present invention, an airbag folded and housed in the upper edge of an opening inside the vehicle deploys downward to cover the opening. The airbag includes a plurality of cells juxtaposed in the front-rear direction each of which, when fed with inflation gas, extends downward from the upper edge of the opening and inflates to separate its interior and exterior walls. Above the cells is located a gas passage extending in the front-rear direction, via which the cells are communicated with one another. The gas passage includes a joint port for introducing inflation gas into the airbag. In each of the cells, the interior wall and exterior wall are respectively bellows-folded on alternate crest folds projecting in the surface and valley folds recessing inside the cell, such that the airbag is folded to bring its lower edge close to its upper edge. The head-protecting airbag device is able to deploy the airbag swiftly.

Head-protecting airbag device

A head protecting airbag is folded up to be housed at an upper part of a window of a vehicle so as to be deployed and inflated downward from the upper part of the window so as to cover an interior side of the window. In the airbag, a plurality of parallel cells adapted to be deployed and inflated by an inflating gas introduced thereinto are provided in parallel with each other below a gas supply passage portion in which the inflating gas flows along a longitudinal direction. In a cell of the parallel cells so provided which is required to deploy quickly, of front and rear partitioning portions, a partitioning portion situated at an upstream side of the gas flowing in the gas supply passage portion is provided such that an end thereof which extends upward from a lower edge portion is disposed so as to form an inlet port between a distal end of a horizontal portion of a downstream side partitioning portion and itself.

Airbag apparatus

A head protecting airbag device comprises an airbag folded and housed above the upper edge of a window on the interior side. The airbag includes an airbag body and a current regulating cloth. The airbag body includes: an inflation shielding portion; a gas feed passage portion arranged in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle above the upper edge of the inflation shielding portion; and one gas inlet port protruded upward from a portion of the gas feed passage portion removed from the front end and the rear end. The current regulating cloth includes an inlet side portion and an outlet side portion. The outlet side portion includes first and second gas outlet holes capable of releasing the inflating gas from the inflator to the front and the rear along the gas feed passage portion.

An airbag according to the present invention comprises an airbag body and a plurality of tearable wrapping yarns. The wrapping yarns are wound around the outer circumference of the wrapping area of the airbag body as folded into a generally rod-like shape, along the axial direction of the airbag body and to obliquely intersect the axial direction. In the wrapping area, at least two of the wrapping yarns are wound from the opposite directions to each other. The distance between the adjacent wrapping yarns along the axial direction of the airbag body is within the range of 20 to 60 mm in the wrapping area. The yarn strength of each wrapping yarn is within the range of 7.4 to 65N. In the airbag of the present invention, the airbag body in the wrapping area is kept in a compact shape by a simple wrapping work, while securing the smooth expansion and inflation.

Airbag

Connecting pins are provided at connecting portions on the airbag device side in such a manner as to project therefrom, whereas connecting parts adapted to rotate in directions normal to an axial direction of the connecting pins are disposed on the main body side. The hook portions of the connecting parts interfere with a guide surfaces of the connecting pins which are forced in along the axial direction thereof to thereby be disposed at waiting positions where the hook portions can rotate in the lock releasing direction.

Steering wheel with an airbag device

A pad or cover for an air bag assembly formed of a thermoplastic elastomer and having an outer wall that includes a substantially H-shaped thin-walled breaking seam designed to break when the air bag is actuated. The breaking seam is H-shaped, as viewed in a vertical direction, and the cover includes an ordinary portion outside of the breaking seam. A horizontal seam portion of the substantially H-shaped portion has straight line portions respectively connected to two vertical seam portions lying on both left and right sides of the substantially H-shaped configuration and a curved U-shaped portion that is interposed between the straight line portions. The thickness of the ordinary portion at the outer peripheral side of the U-shaped portion is thicker than the thickness of the ordinary portions in the vicinities of intersections between the vertical seam portions and the straight line portions.

Pad for air bag device

An air bag apparatus includes a pad provided with a mounting piece portion extending downwardly from a bottom surface of the pad and having mounting holes. The mounting piece portion is fixed to a side wall of a bag holder in a state in which the mounting piece portion is held between a backplate and the side wall of the bag holder by rivets inserted into the mounting holes of the mounting piece portion and into mounting holes of the side wall of the bag holder and mounting holes of the backplate. Engagement portions for regulating an upward movement of the mounting piece portion are formed at a lower end portion of the mounting piece portion and the backplate except at those portions below the mounting holes. The engagement portions are formed to be recesses and projections which are adapted to engage are another.

Air bag apparatus

A pad of air bag apparatus which, as a molded part, has an enhanced soft touch and which is protected against accelerated time-dependent changes in the physical properties of the pad's core and skin layers, wherein the pad covers the upper surface of an air bag apparatus which is to be mounted on the steering wheel of an automobile or in any other necessary areas. The pad includes of a skin layer formed of a soft first resin material and a core layer formed of a second resin material harder than the first resin material. The first resin material is a styrenic thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) or olefinic TPE having a hardness (JIS A) of 70 and less whereas the second resin material is a polyester based TPE having a flexural modulus of 1,000-4,000 kgf/cm.sup.2 (98-392 MPa) or a polyurethane based TPE having a flexural modulus of 1,000-2,500 kgf/cm.sup.2 (98-245 MPa).

Pad for air bag apparatus

A pad for an air bag apparatus is provided which assures that a part of the pad between a breakage portion and a side wall portion is not scattered away in pieces when the air bag expands. The pad includes an upper wall portion and side wall portions extending downward from the periphery of the upper wall portion. Cover portions adapted to be opened upon breakage of a breakage portion at the time of expansion of the air bag are formed over the upper wall portion. A predetermined number of vertically extending triangular plate-shaped ribs are integrally molded with the upper wall portion and the side wall portions along the periphery of the breakage portion and extend from the side wall portions to the breakage portion.
