Disclosed herein is a battery pack that includes: a plurality of thin cells arranged in a matrix form in a first direction and a second direction perpendicular to the first direction, wherein a width of each thin cell in the first direction is smaller than widths of each thin cell in the second direction and a third direction perpendicular to the first and second directions, and wherein each of the thin cells has a surface substantially perpendicular to the first direction; a heat insulating member that insulates heat between the thin cells adjacent in the first direction; and a heat conducting member that contacts in common the surfaces of the thin cells arranged in the second direction.

Write/read head supporting mechanism and write/read system having a flexible grounding member

The object of the present invention is to provide a write/read head supporting mechanism for a magnetic or optical disk system having a micro-displacement actuator, by which any impediment to the displacement capability of the actuator is eliminated. A write/read head supporting mechanism comprises a slider provided with an electromagnetic transducer element or an optical module, and a suspension. The slider is supported on suspension by way of an actuator for displacing slider. An electrical connection to the electromagnetic transducer element or said optical module is made by a first interconnecting arrangement movable and/or deformable in the displacement direction of slider by actuator, and an electrical connection to actuator is made by a second interconnecting arrangement.

A method of maintaining a constant flying height of a magnetic head: adapted to maintain a flying height of a magnetic head on a magnetic disk substantially constant irrespective of a change of a skew angle, utilizing a device comprising a magnetic disk, a positioning device, a head supporting device and a magnetic head; said positioning device supporting one end of said head supporting device and rotating the head supporting device on a first plane placed on a second plane of said magnetic disk within a predetermined skew angle range; the head supporting device supporting said magnetic head at the other end thereof; the magnetic head being attached with reading/writing elements at an air discharge end of a slider having flying planes on a side of a third plane thereof opposing the magnetic disk; a thickness of said slider from each of the flying planes to an opposite surface on the reverse side thereof being 0.65 mm or less; a length in a first direction of air discharge thereof being 3 mm or less, and a width in a second direction orthogonal to the first direction of air discharge thereof being 2.5 mm or less; wherein a change of the flying height of the magnetic head on the magnetic disk is 0.02 &mgr;m or less, when the skew angle is changed in a range of &minus;20 to 20 degree.

Method of maintaining a constant flying height of a magnetic head and a magnetic disk drive utilized therefor

A write/read head supporting mechanism including a slider having an electromagnetic transducer element or an optical module, a suspension for supporting the slider and including a ground region, and a microactuator disposed between the slider and the suspension for displacing said slider. Further, at least a part of the microactuator includes an electrically conductive region, and the ground region of the suspension is electrically connected to the slider by the electrically conductive region of the microactuator, such that the slider is grounded so as to prevent an electrostatic breakdown of the electromagnetic transducer element or the optical module.

The object of the invention is to provide a write/read head supporting mechanism for a magnetic or optical disk system having a micro-displacement actuator, by which any impediment to the displacement capability of the actuator is eliminated to achieve reliability improvements. The write/read head supporting mechanism comprises a slider, a suspension and an actuator as at least head constituents. The slider is provided with an electromagnetic transducer element or an optical module. The slider supported on the suspension by way of the actuator is displaceable relatively with respect to the suspension by the actuator. Between relatively displacing head constituents there is a space. Preferably, friction-reducing means should be provided in the space.

A read/write head includes a slider provided with an electromagnetic transducer element (or an optical module), an actuator, and a suspension. The actuator includes a fixed part, a movable part, and at least two beam members for coupling them together. The beam members have a displacement generating means that elongates and contracts by inverse piezoelectric effect or electrostrictive effect. The fixed part is fixed to the suspension, and the movable part is fixed to the slider. Upon the elongation and contraction of the displacement generator, the displacement generator deflects and the movable part displaces linearly, circularly or rotationally with respect to the fixed part, and the electromagnetic transducer element displaces in a linear or circular orbit, so that the electromagnetic transducer element intersects recording tracks. In the actuator, the fixed part, movable part and beam members are formed as an integrated single piece by providing a hole and/or a cutout in a sheet-like member constructed of a piezoelectric or electrostrictive material. The actuator of the structure illustrated is used for the positioning of a direction intersecting recording tracks. In this case, the total sum of voltages applied on the displacement generating means is controlled in such a manner that it is constant at any time, thereby controlling position fluctuations of the electromagnetic transducer element in the direction vertical to the recording medium surface.

A magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus having a magnetic disk, a magnetic head and a magnetic head supporting device. The surface roughness R.sub.max of the magnetic disk is at most 10 nm, and the magnetic head has a slider on which reading and writing elements are mounted. The slider is of a generally rectangular prism shape with the entire area of a medium opposing surface which opposes the magnetic disk being flat. The surface area of the medium opposing surface is 2 mm.sup.2 or less. The apparatus has a first relative speed at which the frictional coefficient between the magnetic disk and the magnetic head is changed from a high value to a low value when the speed increases, and a second relative speed at which the frictional coefficient is changed from a low value to a high value when the speed decreases. A ridge portion between the front surface and the medium opposing surface has a round corner, wherein the length of the round corner in the direction of the medium opposing surface is larger than the length of the round corner in the direction of the front surface.
