A resin frame equipped membrane electrode assembly includes a membrane electrode assembly and a resin frame member. The membrane electrode assembly includes a solid polymer electrolyte membrane and an anode, and a cathode sandwiching the solid polymer electrolyte membrane. The resin frame member is formed around the solid polymer electrolyte membrane. The outer end of an electrode catalyst layer of the cathode protrudes beyond the outer end of a gas diffusion layer, and the resin frame member includes an inner extension protruding toward the outer periphery of the cathode to contact the outer end of the solid polymer electrolyte membrane. The inner extension of the resin frame member has an overlapped portion overlapped with the outer end of the electrode catalyst layer.

Fuel cell membrane electrode assembly

An assembling operation of a fuel cell is effectively simplified. With the simple and economical structure, the desired sealing function is achieved. The fuel cell () includes a membrane electrode assembly () and first and second metal separators () sandwiching the membrane electrode assembly (). Connection channels () are provided on the first metal separator (). The connection channels () connect the oxygen-containing gas supply passage () and the oxygen-containing gas discharge passage () to the oxygen-containing gas flow field (). The membrane electrode assembly () has first overlapping portions () overlapped on the connection channels () for sealing the connection channels (). The first overlapping portions () comprise, in effect, a gas diffusion layer.

Disclosed is an electrode electrolyte for solid polymer fuel cells, which uses a polymer electrolyte containing a polyarylene copolymer containing a nitrogen-containing aromatic ring having a substituent represented by &#x2014;SOH, &#x2014;(O(CH)SOH or &#x2014;O(CF)SOH (wherein h represents an integer of 1-12). By having such a constitution, the electrode electrolyte for solid polymer fuel cells can be produced at a low cost, while being excellent in proton conductivity, dimensional stability, hydrothermal resistance and mechanical strength. In addition, this electrode electrolyte for solid polymer fuel cells enables to recover a catalyst metal.

Electrode electrolyte for polymer-type fuel cell, and use thereof

A membrane-electrode assembly for a solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell is provided that uses a proton conductive membrane having high proton conductivity and also superior heat resistance and chemical durability. A membrane-electrode assembly for a solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell is provided with an anode on one side of a proton conductive membrane and a cathode on another side thereof, and the proton conductive membrane is a sulfonated polyarylene containing a structure expressed by the general formula (1) below:&#x2014;R&#x2014;Z&#x2014;R&#x2003;&#x2003;(1)In the formula (1), Z represents at least one structure selected from the group consisting of &#x2014;CO&#x2014;, &#x2014;SO&#x2014;, and &#x2014;SO&#x2014;; Rrepresents a direct bond or any divalent organic group; and Rrepresents a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic group.

Membrane-electrode assembly for solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell

Flow guides forming an inlet channel are formed on a surface of a metal separator of a fuel cell. The flow guides overlap a section of an outer seal provided on the other surface of the metal separator. When a load is applied to the flow guides and the overlapping section in a stacking direction of the fuel cell, the flow guides and the overlapping section are deformed substantially equally in the stacking direction to the same extent. The line pressure of the flow guides and the line pressure of the overlapping section are substantially the same. The seal length Lof the flow guides and the seal length Lof the overlapping section are substantially the same.

A first seal member is formed integrally on both surfaces of a first metal plate. The first seal member is integrally formed on a cooling surface of the first metal plate, except a region corresponding to a reaction surface facing an electrode reaction surface, and except regions of inlet buffers and outlet buffers. The first seal member has an expansion. The position of an end surface of the expansion substantially matches the position of a wall surface of the outermost groove of a coolant flow field to prevent the flow of a coolant around the electrode reaction surface.

A seal member is formed integrally on surfaces of a metal separator of a fuel cell. The seal member includes an outer seal and an inner seal provided on a surface of the metal separator. A plurality of closure seals are formed integrally with an inner edge of the inner seal. The closure seals close a space between the inner seal and a protrusion forming a fuel gas flow field.

A first seal member is provided integrally on a surface of a first metal separator. The first seal member includes a base portion provided integrally on the first metal separator, a columnar portion protruding from the base portion, and a curved edge portion provided on the columnar portion. The curved edge portion has a predetermined radius of curvature.

A first seal structure includes a seal joint and seal members connected to the seal joint. An interior angle at the seal joint defined by central lines of the seal members is in a range of 40&#xb0; to 90&#xb0;. The seal joint includes a curved portion having a predetermined radius of curvature R for connecting the seal members.

A seal member is formed integrally on surfaces of a metal separator of a fuel cell. The seal members include an outer seal provided near the outer edge of the separator, and an inner seal spaced inwardly from the outer seal by a predetermined distance. When a load is applied to the outer seal and the inner seal in a stacking direction, the outer seal and the inner seal are deformed substantially equally in the stacking direction to the same extent.

A fuel gas inlet is provided at an outer circumferential edge portion of a second separator. First fuel gas flow passage grooves for supplying a fuel gas to an anode electrode are formed on a side of a surface of the second separator. First fuel gas connecting flow passages, which make communication between the fuel gas inlet and the first fuel gas flow passage grooves, include flow passage grooves which are provided on a side of a surface, and through-holes which penetrate through the second separator to make communication with the first fuel gas flow passage grooves. Accordingly, excellent sealing performance is ensured with a simple structure, and it is possible to realize a thin-walled fuel cell.
