It is an object of the invention to provide a novel &#x3c0;-conjugated polymer compound capable of expecting an application as a functional material having a solubility, a heat resistance, an electrochemical activity and a fluorescence, and a method for producing the same. A dihalide is represented by the following formula: (wherein Rrepresents a halogen, Rrepresents an alkyl group or a silyl group having a substituent, and Rrepresents a hydrogen or an alkyl group).

Dihalide, polymer compound and method for producing the same

A method for producing a polymerized hydrocarbon includes a step of a dehalogenation of a halogenated hydrocarbon with a magnesium-diene complex. Low-molecular-weight compounds, such as dimers or trimers of hydrocarbon units, oligomers of hydrocarbon units, or polymers of hydrocarbon units can be produced by this method while generating significantly less odor.

Method for producing polymerized hydrocarbon

A polymer compound which is a polyphenylene co-condensation polymer consisting substantially of paraphenylene group and metaphenylene group and improved in forming ability and functions, wherein the ratio of metaphenylene group is in the range of 60 to 95%.

Polymeric compound

N-Oxides of nitrogenous heterocycle or nitrogenous fused heterocycle polymers of general formula (1) or (7) (wherein any two of a, b, c, d, e, f, g and h are carbon atoms participating in the bonding between repeating units; at least one of them is N&rarr;O; the rest are each CH, N or N&rarr;O; and the degree of polymerization &ldquo;n&rdquo; is at least 5). These polymers have excellent heat resistance, are soluble in aqueous or organic solvents and controllable in the degree of depolarization and electrochemical redox potential, exhibit clear color changes by chemical or electrochemical oxidation or reduction, and are conductive per se . They can be used as moldings such as fibers and films; electrochromic elements; active materials and electrodes of cells; semiconductors including n-type semiconductors; and so on.

Polymers, method of producing the same and use of the same

An alkyl group-substituted poly(quinone) useful as a material for an electrochromic device and an n-type semiconductor device, includes a repeating unit, has a polymerization degree (n) of not less than 20, includes a .pi.-conjugated system, and contains, as the repeating unit, bivalent residues of dihalogenated aromatic compounds of alkyl group-substituted quinones in which the alkyl group has from 1-8 carbon atoms and the bivalent residues are obtained by removing halogen atoms at two locations. A method for producing the alkyl group-substituted poly(quinone) includes dehalogenating and polycondensing to polymerize a dihalogenated aromatic compound of an alkyl group-substituted quinone by removing halogen atoms at two locations in the presence of a zero-valent nickel compound, whereby the zero-valent nickel compound withdraws halogens from the dihalogenated aromatic compound and causes coupling between aromatic groups thereof. Alternatively, the polymerization may be accomplished by electrochemical reduction in the presence of a divalent nickel compound.

Poly(quinone) and preparation and use of same

Disclosed is a copolymer represented by the following general formula (1): ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 represents a group based on a polymer or a copolymer possessing electroconductivity and inducing coloration or discoloration on being oxidized or reduced, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 represent independently a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 1,000 carbon atoms, A represents a group possessing polarity and exhibiting affinity for ions, and L and M are independently an integer of at least 1, providing that the total degree of polymerization is an integer in the range of 10 to 12,000. The copolymer may be a block copolymer or a random copolymer. This copolymer exhibits electrochromism and, therefore, is useful as a coloring-discoloring material which induces coloration or discoloration on being oxidized or reduced, particularly as an electrochromic substance used in an electrochromic display device.

An electroluminescent element includes an organic compound layer formed of a thiophene polymer as a light emitting layer or a hole injection transport layer. The element emits light at high luminance and is reliable.

EL element using polythiophene

A process of producing a device which is one of a battery, an electrochromic device, an electronic device, an n-type conductor, or an electroluminescent device includes fabricating at least one constituent of the device from a polymer comprised of poly(alkylpyridine-2,5-diyl) having a chemical formula: ##STR1## wherein R is an alkyl group having not less than 3 carbon atoms, and n is a degree of polymerization and is not less than 30. Preferably R is an alkyl group having 4 to 20 carbon atoms and n is a degree of polymerization and is not less than 30. Most preferably R is an alkyl group selected from the group consisting of a hexyl group, a pentyl group, an octyl group, a decyl group, and a dodecyl group.

Use of poly(alkylpyridine-2,5-diyl)

A solid polymer electrolyte which has excellent heat resistance and high mechanical strength is prepared by incorporating an alkali metal salt or an alkaline earth metal salt into polyvinyl alcohol. The electrolyte can further contain a polar solvent and/or polyether to provide an elevated ionic-conductivity.

Poly(alkylpyridine-2,5-diyl) and preparation thereof

A polymer, including alkyl substituted poly(2,2 '-bipyridine-5,5 '-diyl) having chemical formulae as follows: ##STR1## wherein R and R' are H or an alkyl group having not less than 1 carbon atom, except that at least one of R and R' is an alkyl group having not less than 3 carbons, `n` is a degree of polymerization and is not less than 10.
