An aqueous ink for ink jet, the aqueous ink including a pigment and a resin for dispersing the pigment. The pigment is impregnated with a compound having a structure in which at least two structures each represented by General Formula (1) are bonded by a glycoside bond.

The invention provides an aqueous ink containing a coloring material, wherein the coloring material is a self-dispersible pigment in which a functional group containing another atomic group and an anionic group such as a carboxylic acid group, a sulfonic acid group, a phosphoric acid group or a phosphonic acid group are bonded to a particle surface of a pigment such as carbon black or an organic pigment, and a standard deviation of an introduced amount of the functional group is 0.0380 or less.

The invention provides an ink for use in an ink jet recording process in which an ink is ejected from a recording head by the action of thermal energy, the ink comprising a pigment, a water-soluble polyurethane polymer, a compound represented by a general formula (1) having a weight-average molecular weight of 1,000 or more and 8,500 or less, and a polyethylene oxide alkyl ether, the alkyl group of which has 12 or more carbon atoms, wherein, based on the total mass of the ink, the content (mass %) of the compound represented by the general formula (1) is 0.4 times or more and 10.0 times or less in terms of mass ratio with respect to the content (mass %) of the polyethylene oxide alkyl ether.

An ink set for ink jet includes a combination of a first ink and a second ink. The first ink contains a self-dispersible type carbon black and a specified particle A. The content of the particle A in the first ink is 0.05% by mass or more and 0.50% by mass or less, and the mass ratio of the content of the particle A to that of the self-dispersible pigment in the first ink is 0.056 times or more and 0.250 times or less. The second ink contains a specified particle B. The acid value a of the particle A and the acid value b of the particle B satisfy the relation of a&#x2266;b.
