A gland packing provided in a fluid apparatus such as a pump and compressed in an axial direction so as to prevent penetration leakage of a fluid is provided. The gland packing has a packing base materialof a predetermined length including a band-like flat braidbraided by moving a plurality of yarnsalong one track K. The band-like packing base materialis shaped into a ring by abutting longitudinal endsandof the packing base materialso that a width direction thereof is parallel with a packing axial direction, and is then compressed in the axial direction, whereby the packing base materialis overlappedly folded in a packing axial direction, with a longitudinal direction of the packing base materialas a direction of folding lines

Gland packing and packing set

A gasket having a concentrically waved metal sheet, i.e., a core member, which has a PTFE sheet or an inorganic sheet of sealing-property layered and bonded on each of its opposite surfaces. The gasket makes it possible to ensure a stable sealing-property for a long period of time with a low to a high fastening-load applied. The metal sheet has valley portions, which were conventionally vacant gaps, and are filled with powdered sealing member to be embedded from the beginning. Therefore, the PTFE sheet or the inorganic sheet at the valley portions of the metal sheet that conventionally could not be compressed with a low fastening-load applied is compressed and even with the low fastening-load applied can secure a fastening surface-pressure over the entire surface. Further, since it is possible to suppress the deformation of the sheet in quantity, which was conventionally large, the PTFE sheet or the inorganic sheet each of low-fluidity are arranged so as not to be broken with a high fastening-load applied and the thinner PTFE sheet or the thinner inorganic sheet can be used.

Gasket

A gasket having a concentrically waved metal sheet, i.e., a core member, which has a sheet of sealing-property layered and bonded on each of its opposite surfaces. The gasket has an enhanced adaptability of the sheet material and enables the thinner sheet to be used and at the same time makes it possible to ensure a stable sealing-property for a long period of time with a low to a high fastening-load applied. The metal sheet has valley portions, which were conventionally vacant gaps, and are filled with powdered sealing member to be embedded from the beginning. Therefore, the sheet at the valley portions of the metal sheet that conventionally could not be compressed with a low fastening-load applied can be compressed and even with the low fastening-load applied can secure a fastening surface-pressure over the entire surface. Further, since it is possible to suppress the deformation of the sheet in quantity, which was conventionally large, a sheet made of not only the high-fluidity material but also the low-fluidity material can be used as well as the thinner sheet.

A yarn which is configured by using expanded graphite and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTEE) is provided while improving the yarn so that the expanded graphite functioning as a core member is not exposed and it can be simply produced. The yarn is formed by: forming a base member configured by enveloping an expanded graphite sheet member with a PTEE film, in a state where the PTEE film and the expanded graphite sheet member are aligned with each other in longitudinal direction; and twisting the base member. The base member has an approximately circular sectional shape, and is configured by enveloping the expanded graphite sheet member having a rounded sectional shape with the PTEE film which is rounded in a pipe-like shape.

Yarn

A packing is disclosed for hermetically sealing a member. The packing in accordance with the present invention comprises braiding yarns each of which includes a plurality of longitudinally arranged reinforcing fiber yarns and expanded graphite integrally bonded to at least one side of the reinforcing fiber yarns with adhesive, so that the braiding yarns are provided with excellent sealing properties and strong tensile strength and toughness. A plurality of such braiding yarns may be put together to form a core member. The core member may be covered, at the outer periphery thereof, with a braided body of the braiding yarns. A plurality of such braiding yarns as put together may be braided (square-knitted). Alternatively, a plurality of such braiding yarns as put together may be twisted. Thus, packing having a free length may be obtained. The packing thus obtained may be used as cut, at a site, to a predetermined length according to the size of the object member to be sealed. This eliminates production, based on estimations in advance, of a variety of annular packings according to the size of object members to be sealed, as done in molded packing.

Packing

A gland packing which is made of a material configured by windingly laminating an expanded graphite tape into a spiral shape. In the gland packing, ring-like projected parts are disposed on end faces of a die mold packing part made of an expanded graphite tape windingly laminated into a spiral shape so as to be integrated with the part. Ring-like seal members are brought into tight contact with the end faces of the die mold packing part excluding the ring-like projected parts in such a manner that the ring-like projected parts are projected in an axial direction beyond the outer faces of the respective ring-like seal members.

Gland packing

A process for enabling a yarn formed by filling the interior of a tubular member configured by knitting or braiding a fibrous material with expanded graphite as a base material, to be produced in a state of a high productivity in order to enable the yarn to be actually used in an economical manner is provided. The process has: a fine cutting step of successively cutting an expanded graphite sheet which is continuously supplied in a state where the sheet has a predetermined width, to a small width along the width direction of the sheet; and a supplying and filling step of guiding and supplying a strip-like expanded graphite material which is produced by the fine cutting step, into the tubular member to be filled into the tubular member.

Process and apparatus for producing yarn and gland packing

The present invention relates to an annular sliding fluoroplastics member which is requested to have good mechanical properties, resistance to abrasion and wear, thermal conductivity, heat resistance, and the like, and also to a method of producing such an annular sliding fluoroplastics member. The annular sliding fluoroplastics member of the invention has a composite structure which mainly consists of fluorine plastics and short fibers, and 20 or more wt. % of short fibers by weight of a total amount of the short fibers are oriented in a direction along which a burden of a load is large. According to this configuration, the buckling resistance and the pressure resistance are enhanced. A member having a high buckling resistance can be used in a thrust slide bearing or a thrust washer in which a large press load is applied in the axial direction, and a member having a high pressure resistance can be used in a radial slide bearing in which a large press load is applied in a radial direction. In some cases, in the annular sliding fluoroplastics member of the invention, filaments consisting of long fibers may be stitched to the inner peripheral face or the like, the surface is covered with an expanded graphite sheet, or the member is impregnated with a lubricant. The member having such a structure is excellent in buckling resistance and pressure resistance in a radial direction, and also in resistance to abrasion and wear, thermal conductivity, etc. According to the production method of the invention, a cutting work step can be omitted, and therefore materials can be prevented from being wastefully used, and the production cost can be reduced.

Annular sliding fluoroplastics member, and method of producing an annular sliding fluoroplastics member

In a braiding yarn made of expanded graphite, a reinforcing wire membermade of a stainless steel wire which is easily plastically deformed, and having a diameter of 0.05 to 0.2 mm is spirally wound around the outer periphery of a twisted expanded graphite base memberhaving a width of 3 mm and a thickness of 0.38 mm, at a narrow pitch P of 0.5 to 5 mm without slack. Alternatively, the reinforcing wire member is wound so as to be embedded in the inner side of and along an edgeof an expanded graphite tape which is spirally exposed from the outer surface of the expanded graphite base member

Braiding yarn made of expanded graphite, and gland packing

A reinforcing member made from a fibrous material and disposed at least on one face of a strip-like expanded graphite to form a strip-like base member. The base member is stranded to be formed as a cord-like member. At this time, one side end edge of the base member is placed on the outer peripheral surface of the cord-like member, and, in the side end edge, the strip-like expanded graphite is more elongated in the width direction than the reinforcing member. The stranding of the base member is applied while the strip-like expanded graphite which is elongated in the width direction is placed on the inner side, and the reinforcing member which is short in the width direction is placed on the outer side. According to the configuration, both the reinforcing member and the strip-like expanded graphite are placed in a spiral manner to be alternately arranged in the axial direction on the outer peripheral surface of the cord-like member.

Material for gland packing and the gland packing

A gland packing including strip-like expanded graphite is disposed on one face of a sheet-like reinforcing member configured by a fibrous material to form a strip-like base member. The base member is stranded to be formed as a cord-like member. The outside of the cord-like member is covered by a portion of the strip-like expanded graphite, and the whole reinforcing member and the remaining portion of the strip-like expanded graphite are involved in the cord-like member. A large number of openings are formed in the reinforcing member. The strip-like expanded graphite faces the openings. The strip-like expanded graphite is engaged with the openings.

A material for gland packing including a sheet-like reinforcing member configured by a fibrous material disposed at least on one face of a strip-like expanded graphite to form a strip-like base member. The base member is stranded to be formed as a cord-like member. Then, the outer side of the cord-like member is covered by a portion of the reinforcing member, and the remaining portion of the reinforcing member is involved in the cord-like member. A large number of openings are formed in the reinforcing member, and a strip-like expanded graphite faces the openings engages with the openings.

The present invention provides a gland packing in which impairment of the sealing performance due to cracks that unwillingly occur in an end portion in the width direction of an expanded graphite tape of a braiding yarn in the gland packing can be suppressed. In gland packingsbraiding yarns include braiding yarnsA in each of which an expanded graphite tapeis bent so as to contract in the width direction, and both end portionsin the width direction of the bent expanded graphite tapeare folded back, or braiding yarnsA in each of which at least an outer end portionin the width direction of a twisted expanded graphite tapeis folded back.

The present invention relates to a braiding yarn made of expanded graphite for a gland packing which is to be used in a shaft seal part of a fluid apparatus or the like. In the braiding yarn made of expanded graphite of the invention, an expanded graphite tape of a predetermined width is folded into a valley fold in the longitudinal direction, both end portions in the width direction of the expanded graphite tape are bent so as to be directed toward the inner side of the width direction of the expanded graphite tape, and the outer periphery of the tape is covered by a reinforcing member configured by a braided body of stainless steel wires. The expanded graphite tape may be twisted. Reinforcing fibers may be embedded in the expanded graphite tape. Part of expanded graphite particles on the side of the surface of the expanded graphite tape may be removed away. According to the expanded graphite tape of the invention, flaking of expanded graphite particles during a braiding process is reduced or prevented from occurring, and the pressure resistance of a gland packing can be enhanced.

Braiding yarn made of expanded graphite

The present invention provides a gland packing in which impairment of the sealing performance due to cracks that unwillingly occur in an end portion in the width direction of an expanded graphite tape of a braiding yarn in the gland packing can be suppressed. In gland packings , braiding yarns include braiding yarns A in each of which an expanded graphite tape is bent so as to contract in the width direction, and both end portions in the width direction of the bent expanded graphite tape are folded back, or braiding yarns A in each of which at least an outer end portion &prime; in the width direction of a twisted expanded graphite tape is folded back.
