A gas sensor has a porous protective layer disposed on a surface of a sensor element. In this gas sensor, the porous protective layer includes ceramic particles and ceramic fibers. Further, the ceramic fibers are present in the porous protective layer over a range from a front surface to a back surface thereof.

A silicon carbide porous body contains β-SiC particles, Si particles, and metal silicide particles. The maximum particle diameter of the β-SIC particles is not smaller than 15 μm. The content of the Si particles is not lower than 10 mass %. The maximum particle diameter of the Si particles is not larger than 40 μm. Further, an oxide coating film having a thickness not smaller than 0.01 μm and not larger than 5 μm is provided on surfaces of the Si particles.

A porous material includes aggregate particles and a binding material. In the aggregate particles, oxide films containing cristobalite are provided on surfaces of particle bodies that are silicon carbide particles or silicon nitride particles. The binding material binds the aggregate particles together in a state where pores are provided therein. The porous material contains at least one of copper, calcium, and nickel as an ancillary component.

A porous material includes an aggregate in which oxide films are formed on surfaces of particle bodies, and a binding material that contains cordierite and binds the aggregate together in a state where pores are formed. The binding material or the oxide films contain a rare-earth component that excludes Ce.

A honeycomb structure has a plurality of cells formed by a plurality of partition walls. The partition walls are formed of a porous material composed predominantly of cordierite. Each partition wall includes surface layer portions having a porosity of 50% or more and an inside portion having a porosity of 50% or more, the surface layer portions being portions ranging respectively from opposite surfaces to a depth corresponding to 25% of the thickness of the partition wall, and the inside portion being the other portion. The surface layer portions and the inside portion both include pores having axial pore widths of less than 30 &#x3bc;m and pores having axial pore widths of 30 &#x3bc;m or more. A mean axial pore width in the surface layer portions is smaller than a mean axial pore width in the inside portion.

Honeycomb structure and method of producing honeycomb structure

A porous material includes an aggregate, and a binding material that binds the aggregate together in a state where pores are formed. The porous material contains 0.1 to 10.0 mass % of an MgO component, 0.5 to 25.0 mass % of an AlOcomponent, and 5.0 to 45.0 mass % of an SiOcomponent with respect to the mass of the whole porous material, and further contains 0.01 to 5.5 mass % of an Sr component in terms of SrO.

A porous material includes aggregate particles and a binding material. In the aggregate particles, oxide films containing cristobalite are provided on surfaces of particle bodies that are silicon carbide particles or silicon nitride particles. The binding material contains cordierite and binds the aggregate particles together in a state where pores are provided therein. The mass ratio of the cordierite to the whole of the porous material is in the range of 10 to 40 mass %. The oxide films that exist between the particle bodies and the binding material have a thickness less than or equal to 0.90 &#x3bc;m.

A ceramic porous body includes skeleton portions; and pore portions formed between the skeleton portions, the pore portions being capable of allowing a fluid to flow therethrough. In a cross section parallel to a flow direction of the fluid, the skeleton portions have a ratio of a skeleton length of 40 &#x3bc;m or more of 15% or less in a direction orthogonal to the flow direction of the fluid.

An intermediate member is a member which is directly or indirectly sandwiched between a first object and a second object. The intermediate member includes a plate-like supporting member having a lower surface which is one main surface opposed to the first object and a plurality of ceramic blocks fixed on an upper surface which is the other main surface of the supporting member in a state of being separated from one another. Thus, in a state where the plurality of ceramic blocks are collectively held by the supporting member having relatively high shape retention, by disposing the intermediate member between the objects, it is possible to easily arrange the plurality of ceramic blocks between the objects with high positioning accuracy.
