In a perpendicular magnetic recording head in which a magnetic pole part of a main magnetic pole layer exposed at a medium-opposing surface exhibits a trapezoidal form narrower at a leading edge than at a trailing edge on the return yoke layer side, a bottom shield layer made of a soft magnetic material is provided below the leading edge of the magnetic pole part of the main magnetic pole layer in the track width direction while interposing a nonmagnetic material layer therebetween. The gap between the bottom shield layer and the leading edge of the magnetic pole part is set to less than 60 nm.

In a perpendicular magnetic recording head in which a magnetic pole part of a main magnetic pole layer exposed at a medium-opposing surface exhibits a trapezoidal form narrower on the leading edge side than on the trailing edge side, a pair of partial side shield layers made of a soft magnetic material are provided on both sides in the track width direction of the magnetic pole part of the main magnetic pole layer such as to be located more on the leading edge side of the magnetic pole part.

A perpendicular magnetic recording head includes a main magnetic pole layer and an auxiliary yoke layer that overlaps the main magnetic pole layer as viewed in a top view and is magnetically coupled to the main magnetic pole layer. The main magnetic pole layer includes a pole straight part exposed to an opposing surface opposite a recording medium, and a flared part that extends from the pole straight part in a height direction, the flared part broadening in a track width direction as the flared part extends in the height direction. The auxiliary yoke layer includes a flared part that extends from the recording medium-opposing surface, the flared part broadening in the track width direction as the flared part extends in the height direction. The flared part of the auxiliary yoke layer is disposed at a position located closer to the rear side in the height direction than the flared part of the main magnetic pole layer. The flared part of the main magnetic pole layer is formed at a flare angle greater than a flare angle of the auxiliary yoke layer.

In a perpendicular magnetic recording head in which a magnetic pole part of a main magnetic pole layer exposed at a medium-opposing surface exhibits a trapezoidal form narrower at a leading edge than at a trailing edge on the return yoke layer side, a magnetic shield layer having a pair of side shield parts separated at the leading edge so as to oppose both side faces of the magnetic pole part and a bottom shield part magnetically connected to the pair of side shield parts and positioned below the leading edge of the magnetic pole part is provided on the leading edge side in the track width direction of the magnetic pole part of the main magnetic pole layer.
