In a conventional method of driving a plasma display panel, for example, an auxiliary discharge is executed between an A electrode and a Y electrode to improve light-emission efficiency of a display discharge. However, since a phosphor layer is present between the A electrode and the Y electrode, the phosphor layer is exposed to a discharge, whereby there is a problem that its characteristic deteriorates. A method of driving a plasma display panel having a structure, in which at least three display electrodes X, Y, and Z used for a display discharge are provided to a display cell and no phosphor layer is formed between said display electrodes and a discharge space, the method comprising the steps of: varying a potential of at least one display electrode Z of said display electrodes during said display discharge; and making a potential of said at least one display electrode Z at a time of starting said display discharge different from that at a time of ending said display discharge.

Plasma display panel driving method and plasma display apparatus

An insulation layer covering segment layers and a plurality of row electrodes arranged on a first substrate has, on its surface, first projections and second projections. The first projections have a shape and a height corresponding to those of the row electrode, and contacts partitions disposed on a second substrate. The second projections have a shape and a height corresponding to those of the segment layer. The partitions and the second projections constitute discharge barriers between columns, which prevents discharge interference from occurring between cells along the row electrodes.

A plasma display panel (PDP) not only capable of reducing a discharge start voltage but also of making the discharge start voltage uniform in each cell without being adversely affected by the variations in the distance between electrodes caused during manufacture has been disclosed, wherein a pair of electrodes, provided in each of a plurality of cells respectively in which a discharge is caused to occur selectively for display in a discharge space, has facing edges, respectively, provided for discharge and the distance between the facing edges changes when viewed from a direction perpendicular to a substrate and the edges in each of the plurality of cells have substantially the same shape.

The plasma display apparatus, in which the light emission efficiency is improved, has been disclosed. The fourth electrodes, which extend in the same direction of the first electrodes (X electrode) and the second electrodes (Y electrodes) and are exposed into the discharge space, are provided between the first and the second electrodes where the sustaining discharge is carried out, and when the sustain action is carried out, the fixed voltage between the voltage applied to the first electrode and that applied to the second electrode is applied to the fourth electrode provided between the first and the second electrodes where the sustain action is carried out in order to make the electric field between the first and the second electrodes uniform.

A PDP apparatus of good display quality has been disclosed, wherein plural common electrodes and plural scan electrodes that extend in the directions perpendicular to each other are formed on a first substrate and plural address electrodes that respectively make a pair with the plural common electrodes and extend in the same direction of that thereof are formed on a second substrate. A display cell is formed at the crossing portion of each pair of the common electrode and the address electrode and each scan electrode, the lit state or the unlit state of each display cell is selected by applying a scan pulse sequentially to the scan electrode and applying an address pulse selectively to the address electrode in synchronization with the application of the scan pulse, and a sustain pulse is applied to the plural common electrodes and the plural scan electrodes.

A plasma display includes address electrodes for scanning and addressing display cells, and scan electrodes for establishing an address discharge between the address electrodes and the scan electrodes by addressing. The display also includes common electrodes for establishing a sustain discharge between the scan electrodes and the common electrodes to display an image at the display cells, and a scan driver for supplying a voltage to the scan electrodes so as to scan display cells upon addressing during divided periods. Upon addressing, the scan driver varies the potential of a scan electrode adjacent to the scan electrode that corresponds to the addressed address electrode.

Plasma display and method for driving the same

A plasma display panel comprising plural kinds of phosphors, each of which emits a light having a different kind of color, separators which separate the plural kinds of phosphors, and discharge cells having sustain electrode pairs which create discharges producing the light emissions from the phosphors. In the plasma display panel, sustain discharge currents through the sustain electrode pairs in the discharge cells are set at different values according to respective brightness of the lights emitted from the plural kinds of phosphors.

After a sustain discharge period, a voltage twice a sustain pulse is applied to one of sustain discharge electrodes to form, on an address electrode, wall charges capable of self-erase discharge between an address electrode and the sustain discharge electrode by an address pulse, and the address pulse is applied to the address electrode to perform self-erase discharge between the address electrode and the sustain discharge electrode, thereby removing the wall charges formed on the address electrode. With this arrangement, a cell to be turned on in accordance with display data can be accurately selected in an address period without forming any wall charges on the address electrode, and any degradation in drive margin or display quality of a plasma display device can be suppressed.

In a reset period after a sustain discharge period, erase discharges are done by applying pulse voltages having different waveforms in the first erase discharge period for an ON cell turned on in the preceding sustain discharge period and in the second erase discharge period even for an OFF cell not turned on in the preceding sustain discharge period. Weak wall charges that could not completely be erased in the first erase discharge period, i.e., weak wall charges having been accumulated in the OFF cell under the influence of the ON cell can be erased in the second erase discharge period. This makes it possible to prevent an ON operation of the OFF cell that should not be turned on in the subsequent address period and sustain discharge period, and to improve the driving voltage margin.

A method for driving a plasma display panel applies, within a subfield among the n subfields, a narrow-width pulse having a pulse width equal to or less than 2 &mgr;s to first electrodes in order to cause an erase discharge while terminating a discharge caused between the first and second electrodes, and applies a voltage pulse to third electrodes so that the voltage pulse falls at the same time as the narrow-width pulse falls.

A method of driving a plasma display is disclosed, in which the deterioration of the display quality which otherwise might be caused by the light emission due to a reset pulse is prevented thereby to improve the display quality. The voltage of the reset pulse is set taking the voltage due to the accumulated charge into consideration in accordance with a specific display. In this way, the self-erasure discharge is not caused in all the cells but only in the cells involved in display. The display brightness is set also for the self-erasure discharge as a discharge involved in display like the sustaining discharge.
