According to one embodiment, a magnetic resonance imaging apparatus includes processing circuitry. The processing circuitry acquires a first resonance frequency distribution of a first tissue and a second resonance frequency distribution of a second tissue which is different from the first tissue. The processing circuitry calculates a center frequency of a frequency-selective pulse that suppresses or emphasizes either one of the first tissue and the second tissue in accordance with the first and second resonance frequency distributions. The processing circuitry collects a magnetic resonance signal after the frequency-selective pulse is applied at the calculated center frequency.

The processing circuitry collects a magnetic resonance (MR) image of the second imaging range under a static magnetic field which is corrected based on the static magnetic field correction amount. The processing circuitry corrects distortion of the collected MR image.

According to one embodiment, magnetic resonance imaging apparatus includes a transmission coil, a plurality of reception channels, transmission/reception circuitry, and processing circuitry. The transmission coil transmits an RF wave to a subject. The reception channels receive MR signals generated from the subject. The transmission/reception circuitry controls the transmission coil to change the flip angle of a nucleus contained in the subject and excited by the transmitted RF wave. The processing circuitry determines whether the reception channels include an impaired channel, based on the comparison between the distributions of the signal values of the received MR signals with respect to the changing flip angles among the reception channels.

The input unit receives a setting operation to set a plurality of image taking regions within a position determining image, from an operator of the apparatus. The direction setting unit sets phase encoding directions for the plurality of image taking regions to be in the same direction as one another, regardless of setting operations performed by the operator via the input unit.
