An optical device includes an optical waveguide, an optical element, and a resin layer disposed between the optical waveguide and the optical element. The resin layer is formed of a photocurable material alone or in combination with a thermosetting material and includes an optical interconnect for optically connecting the optical waveguide and the optical element. The optical interconnect has a higher refractive index than a region of the resin layer around the optical interconnect. A method for producing the optical device includes providing the photocurable material between the optical waveguide and the optical element, partially irradiating the photocurable material with light to form the optical interconnect, and secondarily irradiating the overall photocurable material with light to cure the overall resin layer.

The present invention teaches a method for enabling the formation of a high damping, soft polymer gel. The method includes: reacting a poly(alkenyl benzene-co-maleimide) polymer with a maleated polyalkylene and an alkyl diamine under substantially dry conditions sufficient to form a polyalkylene grafted poly(alkenyl benzene-co-maleimide) polymer product; and, dispersing the polyalkylene grafted poly(alkenyl benzene-co-maleimide) polymer product with an extender oil sufficient to form the gel. There are disclosed a block copolymer of at least one elastomeric block and at least one syndiotactic polystyrene block which comprises 100 parts by weight of a polymer component comprising 1 to 80% by weight of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) block(s) and 99 to 20% by weight of rubbery elastomeric block(s) and at least 30 parts by weight of an extender.
