A scanning line interpolation circuit for reproducing scanning lines not transmitted through interpolation on the basis of a main scanning line signal and an auxiliary signal both transmitted, wherein an interpolated scanning line signal is generated on the basis of the main scanning line signal and auxiliary signal with respect to a frequency band used to transmit the auxiliary signal and an interpolated scanning line is generated in response to picture motion on the basis of only the main scanning line signal with respect to a frequency band used not to transmit the auxiliary signal.

A method for producing an NTSC compatible television signal for a widescreen television system having a widescreen panel includes deriving a luminance signal of a central portion of the widescreen panel, deriving a color signal modulated in response to the luminance signal according to the NTSC system, deriving a time-expanded signal from luminance signals of two sides of the widescreen panel modulating a sub-carrier so that a scanning line of identical phase drops down for each field, and deriving a time-expanded color signal from color signal of the two sides of the widescreen panel modulating the sub-carrier and having a phase which is the same in every scanning line in a field and which is inverse with response to the phase for the adjacent fields and having a horizontal frequency of the time-expanded luminance signal. The luminance signal, color signal, time-expanded luminance signal and time-expanded color signal are multiplexed so as to enable production of the NTSC compatible television signal.

Method for producing NTSC compatible signal for widescreen tv system

A television signal transmission system is improved to be able to transmit a video signal having a frequency band wider than existing transmission frequency bands while maintaining compatibility with existing television systems. On the sending side, a wide-band luminance signal is frequency-shifted and inserted into a vacant frequency spectrum of a television signal in the existing television systems before transmission. A decoder which decodes variable-length codes by the use of a logical circuit for conversion of the codes the construction of which is simplified. The decoder comprises a shift register which stores an input code therein, the logical circuit which converts the code signal of the shift register into a different code, a detector circuit which detects completion of the code conversion in the logical circuit, and means for inserting a predetermined code into the shift register on the basis of an output of the detector circuit.

Decoder for variable-length codes

In a transmission system in which two-level picture signal is divided into blocks, each having a predetermined number of picture elements, the pieces of signal contained in the respective blocks are converted to a predetermined number of codes, and the codes are converted to modulated signals having different levels or phase, the modulator circuit is so designed that any two modulated signals causing the shifting of the contour of picture may be converted to two signals having adjacent levels or phases, so as to minimize the degradation of the quality of the reproduced picture due to code errors caused during transmission.
