A multifunction apparatus that is capable of executing a scan job and another image process in parallel without lowering a reading speed of a scanner unit. A reading unit reads a document according to an execution instruction for a predetermined image process. An image processing unit applies the predetermined image process to image data obtained by the reading unit. A clock controller controls an image transfer clock for transferring the image data to the image processing unit from the reading unit. The clock controller sets a frequency of the image transfer clock to a predetermined frequency in a case where the predetermined image process is executed independently. And the clock controller sets the frequency of the image transfer clock to a frequency lower than the predetermined frequency in a case where the predetermined image process is executed in parallel with another image process that differs from the predetermined image process.

A developing apparatus includes a developer carrying member, a developer container, and a regulating member to regulate the thickness of the developer. The regulating member includes a support member having one end fixed to the developer container and the other end free, with the support member extending in a direction opposite to the rotating direction of the developer carrying member, and a contact member to be fixed to the other end of the support member and to contact the developer carrying member. The contact member includes a contact curved surface along a peripheral surface of the developer carrying member, and an opposite surface to face the developer carrying member. The contact pressure of the contact curved surface applied to the developer carrying member decreases as a location on the developer carrying member approaches a downstream side in the rotating direction.

A regulating portion includes a first contact portion, a second contact portion, opposed surface portion, and a second opposed surface portion. When, in a plane orthogonal to the rotation axis direction of a developer bearing member, the fixed end and the free end of a supporting member are connected by an imaginary straight line, a contact position where the first contact portion contacts the developer bearing member is located on the downstream side, in the rotation direction of the developer bearing member, of a point of contact of a tangent line parallel to the imaginary straight line with the outer periphery of the developer bearing member.

A relation between a first thickness of a resin layer in an upstream portion of a contact nip in which the resin layer that covers a supporting member of a regulating blade makes contact with a developing roller and a second thickness of the resin layer in a downstream portion of the contact nip is set such that the second thickness is smaller than the first thickness. A potential difference having the same polarity as a toner charging polarity toward the supporting member is created between the supporting member and the developing roller.

An image forming apparatus operable in a mode of forming an image using only a part of image forming stations. In the mode, a developing device contacts an image bearing member in a part of the image forming stations, and the developing device is spaced from the image bearing member in the rest of the image forming stations. The contact pressure between the image bearing member and a transferring device is made smaller in the rest than in the part. The image forming operation in the mode is executed while the image bearing members of the part and the rest are rotated. A controller is configured such that when the operation in the mode is continuously executed for a time period longer than a predetermined period, the contact pressure in the rest is made larger than the above-mentioned smaller contact pressure.

A developing apparatus includes a developer carrying member, a developing frame member to rotatably supporting the developer carrying member, and a regulating member provided on the developing frame member and regulating developer carried on the developer carrying member. The regulating member includes a projecting part projected towards the developer carrying member and having an abutting part that abuts the developer carrying member, and an opposing surface facing the developer carrying member. The opposing surface is positioned on an upstream side of the projecting part and arranged to connect the projecting part with a distal end of the regulating member at a free end side of the regulating member. In addition, the opposing surface is a surface having no point of reverse curve, and the distance between the opposing surface and the developer carrying member is constant or decreasing with distance from the projecting part.

An image forming apparatus includes image forming portions each including an image bearing member, a charging portion, an exposure portion, a developing portion including a developing member, and a cleaning member; a contact-and-separation portion; a voltage source; and a control means. An operation is executed in a contact state of the developing member with the image bearing member at the image forming portion where the image is formed, in a separated state of the developing member from the image bearing member at the image forming portion where the image is not formed and in a state in which the image bearing members of the image forming portions where the image is formed and is not formed are driven. When the operation is continuously executed, the control means executes a contacting operation at the image forming portion where the image is not formed.
