An authentication apparatus and authentication method in which ID information and a registered facial characteristic amount of the principal and of an associated individual associated with the principal in advance are read out by the card reader. The principal and associated individual accompanying the principal are imaged by the imaging section, and a characteristic amount of each of them is calculated by a characteristic amount generating section based on the image data obtained. The registered and obtained characteristic amounts of each of them are compared by the characteristic amount matching level calculating section to calculate respective matching levels. The principal is initially authenticated by the authenticating section by comparing the matching level with a threshold level. If it is unsuccessful, the associated individual is authenticated in the similar way, and if it is successful, the principal is determined to be successfully authenticated.

A printed material to be folded a plurality of times is paginated by displaying an unfolded leaf and assigning page numbers to pages on the face and back of the unfolded leaf through computer processing. The number of rectangles corresponding to the number of pages in a matrix is designated on each of the face and back of the unfolded leaf. One of the rectangles is determined as a 1st page on either one of the face and back of the unfolded leaf, and the rectangle on the reverse side which corresponds to the 1st page is determined as a 2nd page. One of the rectangles which will face the 2nd page when the leaf is folded once is determined as a 3rd page. The rectangle on the reverse side which corresponds to the 3rd page is determined as a 4th page. One of the rectangles which will face the 4th page when the leaf is folded twice is determined as a 5th page, and the rectangle on the reverse side which corresponds to the 5th page is determined as a 6th page. An unfolded leaf can thus easily be paginated before it is folded, stitched, and cut into a book.

In a halftone dot image display unit, a desired position on a multi-tone level image displayed on the display screen and a size of the peripheral area are designated, and the partial halftone dot image data representative of the partial halftone dot image is generated from the partial multi-tone level image data representative of the partial multi-tone level image within the peripheral area of the designated position. The partial halftone dot image represented by the partial halftone dot image data is displayed on the display screen.

Leaf pattern data and parts data representing the shapes of parts including back signatures, register marks, etc. are managed separately from each other. The leaf pattern data includes parts name data and parts position data representing parts position coordinates. When only parts content data of the parts data are corrected, the shapes of parts in the leaf pattern data can be changed. For data output, the leaf pattern data and the parts data are merged and outputted to display a leaf pattern with actual images inserted therein on a display unit.
