A heat-assisted magnetic recording head includes a near-field transducer, a waveguide, and a resonance enhancing feature. The near-field transducer is configured to focus and emit an optical near-field. The waveguide is configured to receive electromagnetic radiation and propagate the electromagnetic radiation toward and proximal to the near-field transducer. The resonance enhancing feature is disposed proximal to the near-field transducer and to a media-facing surface of the heat-assisted magnetic recording head. The resonance enhancing feature includes a first segment and a second segment disposed on opposite sides of the near-field transducer relative to a cross-track dimension of the heat-assisted magnetic recording head. Each of the first segment and the second segment of the resonance enhancing feature includes a liner and a filler. The liner of each of the first segment and the second segment at least partially faces the near-field transducer. The filler of each of the first segment and the second segment is disposed distal to the near-field transducer relative to the liner of the respective segment.

A testing system includes a production-type laser having optical modes of a production laser that interfaces with an optical path of a heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) slider. A far-field light illumination path delivers excitation light from the production-type laser to the optical path of the HAMR slider, the excitation light being emitted from an air bearing surface (ABS) of the HAMR slider. Optics receive the emitted light from the ABS and distribute the emitted light to one or more sensors. The system determines, based on signals received from the one or more sensors, a depolarization of the emitted light and a coupling efficiency of the HAMR slider. The system may also measure light reflecting out of the optical path and Fourier transform these measurements to determine locations of reflections within the optical path.

System and method for far-field optical testing of heat-assisted recording heads

A recording head comprises a waveguide core extending to an air-bearing surface, and a near-field transducer is centrally aligned with the waveguide core and positioned proximate a first side of the waveguide core in a down-track direction. First and second mirror portions form a mirror surrounding the near-field transducer in a cross-track direction with a gap therebetween. The mirror extends in the direction normal to the air-bearing surface a first distance that is less than a second distance the near-field transducer extends in the direction normal the air-bearing surface. First and second reflective heatsink structures are respectively coupled to the first and second mirror portions. The heatsink structures are spaced apart from the near-field transducer in the cross-track direction and extend in a direction normal the air-bearing surface, such that proximate the air-bearing surface the first and second reflective heatsink structures extend substantially parallel to, or converge toward, each other.

A recording head includes a magnetic write transducer proximate a near-field transducer. The magnetic write transduce includes a yoke extending in a direction normal to a media-facing surface and a having an edge facing and recessed from the media-facing surface. A write pole extends beyond the first end of the yoke towards the media-facing surface and overlaps a first surface of the yoke that faces the near-field transducer. The write pole has a stepped edge facing away from the media-facing surface. Two or more coil turns are stacked relative to one another in a down-track direction. The two or more coils face a second surface of the yoke that is opposed to the first surface.

A recording head has a waveguide core layer that delivers light from a light source to a region proximate a magnetic write pole. A near-field transducer is formed of a thin film of Rh or Ir deposited over the waveguide core layer. The near-field transducer includes an enlarged part with two straight edges facing a media-facing surface and at obtuse angles relative to the media-facing surface. A peg extends from the enlarged part towards the media-facing surface. The waveguide core layer has a terminating end with terminating edges that align with the two straight edges of the near-field transducer.
