Provided is a composition for preventing hair loss or promoting hair development, comprising, as an active ingredient, phellandrene or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. More specifically, provided is a pharmaceutical composition, a quasi-drug composition, a cosmetic composition, or a health functional food composition, for preventing hair loss, treating hair loss, promoting hair development, or promoting hair growth, the composition comprising phellandrene or a salt thereof as an active ingredient. The composition not only contains, as an active ingredient, a natural compound having no adverse effects even when administered for a long period of time with respect to hair loss, a chronic disease, but also exhibits excellent and stable efficacy in hair development and hair growth, which allows the composition to be usefully used as an agent for preventing or treating hair loss, or a pharmaceutical, quasi-drug, cosmetic, or health functional food composition for promoting hair development or hair growth.

The present invention relates to a composition comprising ethyl vanillin or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof as an effective ingredient for preventing or treating muscle disease or for improving a muscle function. Having the capability of upregulating the expression of a protein associated with muscle protein synthesis and muscle mass increase in myocytes and downregulating at an mRNA level the expression of an enzyme involved in muscle protein degradation, ethyl vanillin can exhibit effects of muscle differentiation, muscle regeneration, and muscle strengthening through an increase in muscle mass against muscle diseases attributed to muscle function decrease, muscle consumption, or muscle degradation and can suppress sarcopenia. According to the present invention, the compound of Chemical formula 1 has been confirmed to suppress the differentiation of adipocytes, to reduce body weight and the amount of visceral fat, to reduce concentrations of cholesterol, triglycerides, free fatty acids and glucose which are associated with fatty liver and diabetes and the like and to reduce the fatty component in liver tissue, to suppress gene expression associated with obesity in visceral fatty tissue, and to increase the amount of expression of UCP1 and UCP3 which are UCP (uncoupling protein) genes involved in thermogenesis. The compound of Chemical formula 1 can be used to advantage in order to prevent or treat obesity, fatty liver, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and the like since, unlike the obesity treating agents based on synthetic drugs currently in use, it is based on a natural substance and hence entails a very low risk of adverse effects and, additionally, it exhibits its pharmacological effects by regulating the expression of genes associated with obesity rather than exhibiting pharmacological effects by acting on enzymes or the nervous system.
