The present disclosure relates to the application of anti-corrosion coatings for a ferrous substrate. The first coating applied to the ferrous substrate is an electrocoat composition comprising electrically conductive pigments. A dried a cured coating layer of the first electrocoat composition provides the basis for a second electrocoat composition.

Anti-corrosion electrocoat

Disclosed herein is a method to apply waterborne primer, basecoat and clearcoat compositions in a wet-on-wet manner followed by the curing of all three applied compositions to form a durable protective coating on a substrate. The primer composition comprises (meth)acrylic latex, polyurethane resin, melamine and, optionally, polyesters.

Method for using 3-coat-1-bake waterborne coating composition

A pigment dispersing resin is disclosed along with pigment dispersion, electrodepositable coating compositions using the pigment dispersing resin, and methods for applying the electrodepositable coating composition. The pigment dispersing resin consists essentially of the carboxylic acid salt of an aminated bisphenol epoxy resin and an alkoxylated styrenated phenol. This pigment dispersant allows the maximazation of pigment to binder ratios and the minimization of volatile organic content (VOC) in electrocoat baths.

Imidazoline amine-epoxy adduct as a pigment dispersant

A pigment dispersant that is useful in a cathodic electrocoating composition is prepared by bringing into contact compound (i), an alkylene carbonate, with a compound (ii) of the structure: ##STR1## where R is and alkyl group having 8-24 carbon atoms, and bringing the resulting reaction product of (i) and (ii) into contact with a half blocked organic diisocyanate; this pigment dispersant has an advantage of allowing for the maximization of pigment to binder ratios and the minimization of volatile organic content (VOC) in electrocoating compositions.

A pigment dispersant useful in cathodic electrocoat compositions is disclosed. This pigment dispersant is the reaction product of alkylene carbonate and a primary amine containing an imidazoline moiety. This pigment dispersant allows the maximazation of pigment to binder ratios and the minimization of volatile organic content (VOC) in electrocoat baths.
