A photographic film cassette manufacturing apparatus, has a perforator for providing a long film with perforations and a cutter for cutting the long film into individual filmstrips to be contained in the film cassette driven synchronously with transport of the long film. A magnetic recording head for recording data on a magnetic recording layer of the long film is driven in synchronism with the perforator and the cutter. The long film is transported in a first direction before being cut into the individual filmstrips. In cooperation with the cutting, a trailing end of the individual filmstrip in the first direction is moved in a direction which is reverse to the first direction to secure the trailing end to the spool. A cassette shell consisting of a pair of shell halves is temporarily assembled by mating the shell halves together while containing a spool inside the shell halves, and thereafter opened to an extent that confining elements still confine the position of flanges of the spool. The trailing end of the filmstrip is inserted into the opened cassette shell and secured to the spool.

In a camera, one of a plurality of predetermined print aspect ratios is selected for each scene by manual operation of a print mode selection switch, and mechanically readable data representing the print aspect ratio is thereby recorded on the photographic film for each original frame during photographing. The original frames are recorded at a constant taking aspect ratio in the same size on the photographic film. During printing, the trimming data is read from the photographic film, and a part of the original frame that excludes both lateral sides of the original frame is printed based on the trimming data, so as to make a photographic print having the selected print aspect ratio. The camera is provided with a device for changing the field of view, that cooperates with the print mode selection switch, so as to change the aspect ratio of the field of view in accordance with the selected aspect ratio. The photographic film has been previously recorded with several pairs of marks, each pair indicating lateral side border lines of a trimming range which corresponds to one of the predetermined selectable print aspect ratios. A visible mark corresponding to one of the previously recorded marks that indicate the trimming range selected for each original frame, is also recorded on the photographic film during photographing.

A photo film cassette contains a spool rotatably, on which photo film is wound as a roll with a leading end wound on the outside. A cassette shell has a passage port, through which the photo film is passed. A single separating claw is disposed in an inner position in the passage port, separates the leading end from the photo film roll during rotation of the spool to unwind the photo film, and exits the leading end through the passage port. The claw is so positioned as to avoid contact with a second outermost turn of the photo film roll. The photo film includes support material, which supports a photosensitive emulsion layer, and has reliably high stiffness, which remains sufficient even under excessively high humidity. The support material is of stiff resinous film which can have a small thickness from 40 to 100 .mu.m. A trailing end of the photo film is secured to the spool. Ridges are formed along two lengthwise edges of the photo film and in a partial range within a trailer, and stiffen the photo film. Likewise, embossed patterns are disposed on a trailer, and reduce friction between turns of the photo film wound as roll.

Photographic film cassette

A photographic film cassette has a spool around which photographic film is wound in a roll. A cassette shell rotatably contains the spool in a roll chamber. A flexible leader separator is disposed between the roll chamber and a film passageway. The separator is in contact with the outside of the roll of the film, and abuts upon a film leading end during rotation of the spool in the unwinding direction, so as to be flexed during usage. A film leader is separated from the roll, and is advanced outward through the passageway. In a preferred embodiment, a pair of guide members are disposed within the passageway, and are in contact with the film in transporting the film out of/into the cassette shell. Though the cassette shell is molded from non-crystalline resin, these guide members are molded from crystalline resin so as to prevent the film from being damaged. A coaxial pair of rollers may be disposed inward from the passage mouth for supporting an emulsion surface of the film while the film is transported out of/into the roll chamber.

In an instant film pack of the type comprising a parallelepipedal housing having a top wall in which an exposure aperture is formed and a front end wall with a film unit exit slot through which an instant film unit is withdrawn, a supporting member is provided to prevent the film unit from being improperly withdrawn. The supporting member comprises a flexible resilient member attached to the bottom of the film pack at the front end and extending in the direction of withdrawal of the film unit. The flexible resilient supporting member is so disposed as to leave a distance of 0 to 6 mm between its front end and the slot defined between an edge controller and a front edge of a guide member of a pack holder in which the film pack is loaded for use.

A self-processing type film unit for an instant camera having a pair of flexible sheets sandwiching a photosensitive layer forming an image forming area at the intermediate portion of the film unit is provided with a developing solution container at its leading end portion and a solution trapping member for trapping excess solution at its trailing end. Several film units are stacked in a package and put into the instant camera. The camera discharges the film units from the package one by one after exposure to light and then feeds them in between a pair of spreading rollers. The rollers rotate with the film unit pinched between them to discharge it outside the camera. When the film unit is passed between the rollers, the developing solution container is broken by the nipping force of the rollers to release the solution contained therein. The released solution is distributed over the image forming area to develop the image on the spot, pushed by the rollers. In such an instant camera, the film package is positioned in the camera with respect to the rollers so that at the time when the film unit is initially brought into contact with one of the rollers, one of the major surfaces of the unit lies in a plane offset from the plane perpendicular to the plane including both the longitudinal axes of the rollers and tangent to the spreading roller with which the one major surface of the film unit is to be brought into contact.
