An image forming apparatus includes a reversing unit for reversing a two-sided document and placing the document on a platen, a reading unit for reading image data of either a front or back side of the document placed on the platen by the reversing unit, and at least one of: (i) a first detecting/setting unit for providing first information representing a position on which a binding margin of the document is located and a direction in which a top or bottom portion of the document is directed, and (ii) a second detecting/setting unit for providing second information representing a position on which a binding margin of an image to be printed is located and a direction in which a top or bottom portion of the image to be printed is directed. An image converting unit is provided for converting the read image data into output image data according to at least one of: (i) the first information with respect to the position of the binding margin of the document and the direction of the document, and (ii) the second information with respect to the position of the binding margin of the image to be printed and the direction of the image to be printed. A device for detecting a width of a sheet placed on a manual feeding tray of an image forming apparatus includes a first and a second sheet regulating member for moving in a sheet width direction so as to come in contact with both sides of the sheet and for holding the sheet therebetween, thereby regulating movement of the sheet in the sheet width direction. A first rack member, on which a first rack is arranged in the sheet width direction, moves interlockingly with the first sheet regulating member. A second rack member, on which a second rack and a sheet width-detecting rack are respectively arranged in the sheet width direction, moves interlockingly with the second sheet regulating member. The second rack is positioned so as to face the first rack on the first rack member, and a pinion engages with the first rack and the second rack. A gear engages with the sheet width-detecting rack, and a rotary variable resistor is provided which has a shaft which is coaxially joined to the gear so as to regulate rotational displacement of the rotary variable resistor relative to the gear. The rotary variable resistor is rotated when at least one of the first and the second sheet regulating members is moved so as to hold the sheet therebetween, and the rotary variable resistor has a resistance value which is varied in accordance with a rotation angle thereof. A detector is provided for detecting the width of the sheet based on the resistance value of the rotary variable resistor.

An apparatus for forming images on at least one surface of a sheet includes a reader for reading image information on documents, a memory for storing image signals output by the reader, and an image forming unit for selectively forming one of: (i) two page toner images corresponding to the image signals of two pages of the documents separately on two image carrying members, and (ii) a single toner image on one of the two image carrying members. A jam detector detects a jammed sheet, and a delivery detector detects delivery of a copied sheet to outside the apparatus. Image signals are eliminated from memory in accordance with a progression of image formation. If the jam detector detects the occurrence of the jammed sheet, a control unit prohibits the memory from eliminating the image signals until the delivery detector detects a next sheet delivered from the apparatus, so that the selected image expected to be formed by the image forming unit on the jammed sheet may be properly formed on a following sheet based on the image signals retained in the memory. A selector is provided for selecting one of a both-surface copy mode and a single-surface copy mode, wherein the control unit controls the memory to store the image signals corresponding to two pages of the documents when the both-surface copy mode is selected and to store the image signals corresponding to the single page of the documents when the single-surface copy mode is selected.

In a rotation detection apparatus, a magnetism pattern section provided with plural magnetic poles and a FG (frequency generating) pattern section provided with plural toothed wire circuits are located so as to face each other. When either one of the magnetism pattern section and the FG pattern section is rotated together with a rotating member, plural wave signals are electrically induced in the plural toothed wire circuits. The fixing device includes first and second fixing members provided opposite to one side and the other side of the transfer material, respectively, wherein the transfer material passes between the first and second fixing members, and first and second sensors are provided for detecting temperature of the first and second fixing members respectively. The apparatus further includes a control device for controlling the toner image forming device, the first and second transfer devices, and the fixing device. The control device enables image formation on both sides of the transfer material or on one side of the transfer material, and prohibits image formation on at least both sides of the transfer material when the temperature detected by the first sensor is appropriate for the first fixing member, and the temperature detected by the second sensor is not appropriate for the second fixing member.
