A superconducting deflection electromagnet apparatus for deflecting an electron beam includes a liquid helium reservoir 21 disposed outside of the magnetic shield 11 surrounding the cryostat 4 accommodating the upper and lower liquid helium containers 2 in which coil assemblies 1, 31, 32 are disposed. Preferably, the upper and lower liquid helium containers 2 are supported from the cryostat 4 by means of the thermally insulating support members 5, 6 and 8 whose positions are adjustable by means of the threaded projections 5a, 6a and 8a and the nuts 52, 53, 62, 63, 82, 83 engaging therewith. The nuts secure the respective thermally insulating support members to the cap-shaped fixing members 44, 47, 49 attached to the extensions 43, 45, 49 of the cryostat 4.

A device for accelerating and storing charged particles of the present invention comprises a vacuum duct which has two opposite linear portions and two opposite curved portions respectively connected to the linear portions and which functions to maintain the orbit of revolution of the charged particles in a vacuum; an accelerating device for accelerating charged particles which is disposed on the orbit of the charged particles; a pair of bending magnets which are respectively disposed on the curved portions of the vacuum duct; and a pair of quadrupole electromagnets which are respectively disposed on the linear portions of the vacuum duct and at least one of which is disposed at a position at a given distance from the center of the corresponding linear portion.

Device for accelerating and storing charged particles

An electromagnet for a charged-particle apparatus. The electromagnet of the first form of this invention may consist of a deflecting electromagnet comprising an iron core equipped with clamping plates having cavities through which a vacuum chamber runs. Provided in these cavities are small-sized coils using the iron core as the magnetic path and adapted to adjust the orbit for charged particles. The electromagnet of the second form of this invention consists of a deflecting electromagnet equipped with a banana-shaped principal coil whose radius of curvature is larger in its end sections than in its middle section, thereby leveling the magnetic-field distribution on the equilibrium orbit. In the electromagnet of the third form of this invention, the thickness of the iron core, surrounding the principal coil, is different at different positions along the equilibrium orbit for charged particles, thereby making it possible to obtain some desired magnetic-field distribution. The first and third forms of the electromagnet, in particular, are not restricted to a deflecting electromagnet in a charged-particle apparatus but is applicable to other types of electromagnets in a charged-particle apparatus.

Semicircular superconducting deflection magnets for deflecting electron beams along a semiconductor orbit. The magnet 1 comprises a pair of race-track shaped main coils 2 and 3 disposed symmetrically with respect to the plane of the orbit S. Each one of the main coils 2 and 3 is divided into two parts 21 and 22 or 31 and 32, the end portions 21a and 22a or 31a and 32a being displaced from each other in the direction of the orbit S, so that the magnetomotive force thereof is distributed evenly along the orbit S (FIGS. 12 through 14). According to another aspect, rectangular cancellation coils 25, 26, 35, and 36 are provided at the end portions 21a, 22a, 31a, and 32a, respectively, of the coil parts 21, 22, 31, and 32, such that the magnetomotive force of each one of the end portions is cancelled by the magnetomotive force of the adjacent parallel running side of a cancellation coil (FIGS. 21 through 23). According to still another aspect, sextupole correction coils 5 are disposed near the end portions 2a of the main coils 2 along the orbit S.

Deflection electromagnet for a charged particle device

A vacuum chamber for a superconducting SOR apparatus comprises a main chamber through which a beam of charged particles can pass and an SOR chamber which opens onto the inside of the main chamber. The main chamber has a connecting flange formed on each end, and the SOR chamber has a connecting flange formed on its outer end. The dimensions of the vacuum chamber are such that the entire vacuum chamber can fit into the gap between the vacuum tanks of a superconducting bending magnet for the SOR apparatus. The vacuum chamber may further comprise an SOR port in the form of a tube having a flange which connects to the flange of the SOR chamber. The cross-sectional dimensions of the SOR port increase from the inner end which is connected to the SOR chamber to the outer end.

A uniform magnetic field coil assembly having a plurality of pairs of coil elements each included in circuit comprising the parallel connection of a permanent current switch and its protecting means and an individual exciting power source, wherein the plurality of pairs of coil elements are symmetrically disposed against a plane perpendicular to the central axis of the uniform magnetic field coil assembly in the longitudinal direction and the plurality of pairs of coil elements are connected in series, thereby regulating the current flowing to each of the plurality of pairs of coil assembly elements for forming the uniform magnetic field coil as predetermined.

A superconducting synchrotron orbital radiation (SOR) apparatus having a plurality of deflecting electromagnets each comprising first and second superconducting coils which are immersed in liquid helium contained in helium tanks. The helium tanks are surrounded by nitrogen shields which are cooled by liquid nitrogen in nitrogen contained tanks. One of the helium tanks is equipped with a liquid helium supply port and a helium gas exhaust port. All of the other helium tanks are connected with this helium tank such that liquid helium which is supplied to this one helium tank automatically flows to the other helium tanks and such that helium gas from the other helium tanks automatically flows to this helium tank and is exhausted. One of the nitrogen tanks is equipped with a liquid nitrogen supply port and a nitrogen gas exhaust port, and all of the other nitrogen tanks are connected with this nitrogen tank so that liquid nitrogen which is supplied to this nitrogen tank automatically flows to the other nitrogen tanks, and nitrogen gas from the other nitrogen tanks automatically flows to this nitrogen tank and is exhausted.

Superconducting synchrotron orbital radiation apparatus

A charged particle accelerating apparatus has a vacuum chamber for transporting, accelerating, deflecting or storing charged particles. A layer of a low gas-generating material is placed in the vacuum chamber at a position where radiation generated by deflection of the charged particles are irradiated, the low gas-generating material having properties of generating an amount of gas less than a material constituting the vacuum chamber.

A process and apparatus for correcting a crude magnetic field of a main field generator having correcting magnetic field generators associated therewith to produce a substantially homogeneous corrected field. The process comprises the steps of measuring the distribution of said crude magnetic field at a plurality of points, expressing the crude magnetic field at each of the plurality of different measured points by a polynomial equation which contains a main homogeneous magnetic field component, successively higher order inhomogeneous magnetic field components, and a residual, determining the magnetic field output for the correcting generators such that the successively higher order inhomogeneous magnetic field components of the crude magnetic field are completely cancelled by the magnetic field outputs, respectively, of the correcting generators, and producing and superpositioning on the crude magnetic field the determined magnetic field output from the correcting generators.
