A honeycomb filter comprising a pillar-shaped honeycomb structure having a porous partition wall disposed so as to surround a plurality of cells which serve as a fluid through channel extending from an inflow end face to an outflow end face and a porous plugging portion provided at either an end on the inflow end face side or an end on the outflow end face side of the cell, wherein in a processed image obtained by binarizing an electron microscope image of a visual field area of 480 μm×640 μm of the plugging portion, the plugging portion is composed of a plurality of particles, and the number of the particles having an area of 0.25 μmor more is 1000 or more and 3500 or less.

Honeycomb filter

A plugged honeycomb structure includes a honeycomb structure body having a porous partition wall disposed to surround a plurality of cells; and a plugging portion disposed at one end of the cells, wherein, in a section orthogonal to the extending direction of the cell, the cells each have a shape that is polygon, and one of the inflow cells and another are adjacent to each other with the partition wall therebetween, and in the section orthogonal to the extending direction of the cell, a total area of the inflow cell is larger than a total area of the outflow cell, a porosity of the partition wall is 38% or more, a thickness of the partition wall is 125 μm or more and 280 μm or less, a cell density of the honeycomb structure body is 31.0 cells/cmor more, and an air-permeability resistance of the partition wall is 4.5×10Pa·s/mor less.

Plugged honeycomb structure

A honeycomb filter includes a pillar-shaped honeycomb substrate and a plugging portion provided at an end portion on either an inflow or outflow end face side of cells, wherein, in a section orthogonal to the cell extending direction, the shapes of an inflow cell having the plugging portion and an outflow cell having the plugging portion are hexagonal. In the plurality of cells, a plurality of inflow cells surround one outflow cell such that one side of the inflow cell and one side of the outflow cell adjacent to the inflow cell are parallel. The partition wall includes a first partition wall and a second partition wall, at least one of the first partition walls is configured such that a ratio of a thickness of the second partition wall to the first partition wall is 1.0 to 2.5, and a total open frontal area is 35% to 95%.

A honeycomb structure including: a tubular honeycomb structure part having porous partition walls with which a plurality of cells are formed, and an outer peripheral wall; and a pair of electrode parts arranged on a side surface of the honeycomb structure part, an electrical resistivity of the honeycomb structure part is from 1 to 200 &#x3a9;cm, each of the pair of electrode parts is formed into a band-like shape extending in a direction in which the cells extend, in a cross section perpendicular to the extending direction of the cells, the one electrode part is disposed opposite to the other electrode part via the center of the honeycomb structure part, and a total of heat capacities of the pair of electrode parts is from 2 to 150% of a heat capacity of the whole outer peripheral wall.

A honeycomb structure including: a tubular honeycomb structure part having porous partition walls and an outer peripheral wall; and a pair of electrode parts arranged on a side surface of the honeycomb structure part, an electrical resistivity of the honeycomb structure part is from 1 to 200 &#x3a9;cm, each of the pair of electrode parts is formed into a band-like shape, the one electrode part is disposed opposite to the other electrode part via the center of the honeycomb structure part, and a distance from one end portion in the extending direction of the cells to an end portion of the electrode part which faces the one end portion of the honeycomb structure part in the extending direction of the cells is from 1 to 10% of a length of the honeycomb structure part in the extending direction of the cells.

There is disclosed a honeycomb structure including a tubular honeycomb structure part having porous partition walls with which a plurality of cells are formed and an outer peripheral wall, and a pair of electrode parts arranged on a side surface of the honeycomb structure part, an electrical resistivity of the honeycomb structure part is from 10 to 200 &#x3a9;cm, each of the pair of electrode parts is formed into a band-like shape extending in a direction in which the cells extend, in a cross section perpendicular to the extending direction of the cells, the one electrode part is disposed opposite to the other electrode part via the center of the honeycomb structure part, and the electrode part has portions having a thickness of 0 to 70% of the maximum thickness of the electrode part.

To provide a catalytic converter that reduces non-uniformity of temperature of a catalyst support and that can approach a uniform temperature distribution, and a structural body for supporting a catalyst that structures this catalytic converter. At a catalyst support, gradually decreasing width portions, at which a width thereof gradually decreases toward electrode centers, are formed at regions where electrodes, are contactingly disposed, as seen in a cross-section orthogonal to a direction in which exhaust flows. The width is shorter than a length of a center line at a given position. Heat generation and heat dissipation of the catalyst support are balanced overall.

Structural body for supporting a catalyst, and catalytic converter

There is provided a honeycomb filter obtained by bonding, into one piece, a plurality of honeycomb segments comprising partition walls having filtering function, and a number of through-holes divided from each other by the partition walls and extending in an axial direction. Predetermined through-holes are plugged at one end face of the filter, and the remaining through-holes are plugged at the other end face of the filter. The honeycomb filter is characterized in that the honeycomb segment disposed in a peripheral portion of the honeycomb filter has a lower average bulk density than that of the honeycomb segment disposed in a central portion.

Honeycomb structure and process for production thereof

There are disclosed an exhaust emission control system including an internal combustion engine, a filter, and an exhaust pipe, a method of manufacturing a filter suitable for the system, and a method of calculating a pressure loss. The system comprises combustion means for intermittently burning particulate matters arrested by the filter, the filter includes porous partition walls extending from one end face to the other end face thereof, and a large number of through channels partitioned by the partition walls, predetermined through channels are sealed at either of the end faces, and assuming that a partition wall thickness is (X) &#x3bc;m, and the number of through channels per unit area in a cross section vertical to a longitudinal direction of the through channels is (Y) cells/cm, X and Y come within a range surrounded by straight lines connecting points A, B, C, and Din this order in FIG.in the exhaust emission control system. There are provided the exhaust emission control system, the method of manufacturing the filter, and the method of calculating the pressure loss by the filter with good accuracy in which a temperature gradient produced in the filter at the time of regeneration is suppressed while suppressing a rise of the pressure loss by the filter and which are accordingly superior in reliability.

A honeycomb structure includes a plurality of honeycomb segments each having a number of throughholes divided from each other by partition walls and extending in the axial direction of honeycomb segment, wherein the honeycomb segments are bonded at their surfaces parallel to the axial direction to form an integrated body, such that the honeycomb segments comprise those honeycomb segments in which the outer portion 6 has a larger per-unit-volume heat capacity than the central portion does.

An electrode structure includes: a metallic electrode; a case for accommodating and holding the electrode, and one end of a lead wire connecting to the electrode; and an insulating member interposed between the electrode and the case in order to ensure insulation between the electrode and the case, in which structure a waterproof member is interposed between the case and the lead wire in order to prevent the incoming of water from between the case and the lead wire, and an electric heater havinging the above electrode structure. An electrode structure of an electric heater, includes: a first electrode; a second electrode of a cylinder shape, having a base portion connected with the first electrode and a top end portion connected with a lead wire; an insulating member having a thermal resistance, pierced by the second electrode; an elastic insulator having a thermal resistance, covering at least a portion of the second electrode; a case for accommodating and holding the second electrode, having a predetermined length L; and a rubber sealing member attached to the top end of the case. The electrode structure is preferably used by connecting to a conductive substance accommodated in a metallic housing, to apply electricity to the conductive substance. The conductive substance is preferably a metallic honeycomb structure. The given length L mentioned above is preferably L.gtoreq.40 mm.

Electrode structure and electric heater comprising the same

An electrode structure includes a metallic electrode having a configuration of a bending cylinder and having a plurality of members disposed successively in an axial direction of the electrode and mutually connected with adjacent member(s); a case for installing the metallic electrode and one end of a lead wire for electrification therein; and an insulating member which is positioned between the case and the electrode and which the case from the electrode. An electric heater includes a housing, a honeycomb structure installed in the housing, and the electrode structure for electrifying the honeycomb structure. The electrode structure exhibits excellent composability, waterproof ability, and gas sealability.

A structure of an electrode unit for applying electricity to a conductible substance (4) installed in a metallic housing (2) has a metallic electrode (6) connected to a portion of the conductible substance (4), an insulating member (8, 8') positioned between the electrode (6) and the metallic housing (2), and a metallic sealing material (10,10') to be transformed by fastening a nut so as to secure sealability between the electrode (6) and the insulating member (8) and between the metallic housing (2) and the insulating member (8). The structure of an electrode unit is excellent in an insulating property and a gas sealability between the metallic housing (2) and electrode (6) and therefore has high reliability.

A heater unit comprising (1) a honeycomb heater comprising (a) a metallic honeycomb structure having a large number of passages parallel to the direction of a gas flowing through the heater unit and (b) at least one electrode for electrification of the honeycomb structure, attached to the honeycomb structure, and (2) a metallic casing for holding the honeycomb heater (1) therein via at least one metallic supporting member, in which heater unit an insulation portion is provided at least either at the connection area where the honeycomb heater and the supporting member are connected or at the connection area where the supporting member and the casing are connected, and the supporting member has such a structure as to be able to absorb the displacement of the honeycomb heater which appears in a direction substantially perpendicular to said gas flow direction, and has a function of fixing the honeycomb heater against its displacement which appears in the gas flow direction. The heater unit, when exposed to severe driving conditions of automobiles, etc. and subjected to vibration and the expansion and contraction caused by thermal shock, gives rise to neither breakage of honeycomb heater nor peeling.
